Donald L. Showalter is a professor and former chairman of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
Born in Louisville, Kentucky, Showalter received his bachelors degree from Eastern Kentucky University in 1964 and his Ph.D. in 1970 from the University of Kentucky.
Showalter is a proponent of the use of demonstrations in the teaching of science, and has presented programs at Disneyland and the Smithsonian, and has also appeared on the series Newton's Apple.

Showalter received 14 first-place votes, nine seconds and four thirds for 101 points, finishing ahead of Minnesota's Ron Gardenhire, who got 11 firsts, 11 seconds and three thirds for 91 points.
Showalter also won the award in 1994 with the Yankees.

The American Chemical Society presented Don Showalter, professor emeritus of chemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, with the Helen M. Free Award for Public Outreach.
The award, given to Showalter during an American Chemical Society national meeting in San Francisco last month, is presented to those who have worked for the improvement of public recognition and appreciation of the contributions in chemistry.
Between 1987 and 1989, Showalter was involved in the making of a 26-episode PBS series, "The World of Chemistry." The series is still an integral part of chemistry curricula across the country and earned Showalter the moniker of "Doctor Wow" for his frequent exclamations.

Roy Moab Showalter, 81, of 138 Village Square, Chambersburg, and formerly of Maugansville, Md., died Friday, Sept. 29, 2006 in Menno Haven Retirement Community, Chambersburg.
Showalter was a curator of Mennonite Historical Association of the Cumberland Valley, treasurer of Eastern Mennonite Associated Libraries and Archives, and a member of Maugansville Historical Society.
