Sphynx (cat) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sphynx cats are not hypoallergenic[1], in fact they can be even worse for severely allergic people than furred cats.
Sphynx hairlessness is produced by an allele of the same gene that produces the Devon Rex, which has only one of the usual two fur coats.
Sphynx were at one time crossbred with Devon Rex in an attempt to strengthen this gene, but unfortunately this led to serious dental or nervous-system problems and is now forbidden in most breed standards associations.

A female Peterbald in Belgium was bred to a Sphynx and all resulting kittens were born with a full coat.
Thus the Sphynx is not an allowable outcross for the Peterbald breed.
Since the genetics of the Peterbald is not similar to that of the Canadian Sphynx and its' hairlessness is determined by a completely different gene, we elect to remove the word "Sphynx" from the name, and the breed is simply known as the "Peterbald".

Hairlesss Cats. Hairlesss Cats Breeds, History and Origins of Hairlesss Cats.
The modern Sphynx (Canadian Hairless) may be advertised as the hairless cat from the scrolls of antiquity, but it derives from Canadian cats of either the 1960s or 1970s.
This changed with the appearance of the Don Sphynx (Don Hairless, Russian Hairless, Don Bald Cat, Donskoy/Donsky) in 1987 with a hairless blue tortoiseshell cat, which became foundation cat for the Don Sphynx breeding line.
The Don Sphynx was also bred with Russian Blues to produce more Don Sphynx, but some of the offspring were used in the Peterbald breeding program.

The Don Sphynx, A Naked, Happy Slav!
The history of the Don began in 1987 with the discovery of a naked cat in the streets of Rostov.
Unlike the Canadian Sphynx, whose gene responsible for nakedness is recessive, the Don Sphynx is naked because of a dominant gene.
The breeders then had to avoid the temptation to mate their cats with the Canadian Sphynx, not only because the gene was different, but also and above all because it quickly would have become very hard to recognise the morphological differences of each breed.

The story of the Don Sphynx
The appearance of the genetic mutation in the first offspring resulting from the mating of hairless females with common longhair males has allowed a theory that, unlike the earlier established Canadian Sphynx which is determined by a simple recessive allele, the Russian mutation is that of a dominant nature.
Rather, it would be correct to describe this as the product of an "incomplete" dominance of Don Sphynx's mutated gene which is the determinant of the presence of the fur in cats (similar to the manner of incomplete dominance of Canadian Sphynx's hr gene as it relates to Devon Rex's re gene).
Initially the Dons' coloration was not known for its variety - it was mainly fl, blue-tabby, and blue and fl.
