The legend of Don the Beachcomber, who created a South Sea image of Waikiki that’s survived for 50 years, came to life last week in the Willows Restaurant by the fishpond.
In his time, Don the Beachcomber wore elegantly styled bush jackets, natty walking shorts and socks, and a rakish planter’s hat.
Don had a strict rule that patrons of his nightclub be properly shod.

ioneer tropical mixologist Don the Beachcomber is credited with blending West Indies rums and tropical fruit juices to create the first commercial tiki drinks.
It happened in Beverly Hills, Calif., around 1930, at one of the Beachcomber's sidewalk stands, and cocktail historians believe it marked the beginning of the tropical drink craze in the United States.
Mariano Licudine worked his way up in the Don the Beachcomber operation to the "number two" man and in 1956 he left to help open the Mai-Kai in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Manager Kern Mattei gave Cocktail.com a rare tour behind the bar, sharing the secret to Mai-Kai's success.

We were very distressed to learn from Luke (the trusty bartender) that Don the Beachcomber's is going to be closing.
It was a fantastic full Don The Beachcomber restaurant and bar serving mainly Cantonese food with a Polynesian/Hawaiian flair.
The big loss was that Don The Beachcomber was closed and I was told gone for good.

This is a great book to have for your bar, but also a bit of nostalgia for those of us who went to Hawaii in the 50's when it truly was a paradise.
Don the Beachcomber deserves, at long last, his own book of food and drink.
The book tries to claim a a legit Hawaiian cultural affiliation even though the Beachcomber was originally a mainland Californian phenomenon later exported to Hawaii.

Last year we had the closing of Chicago’s Trader Vic’s (which will live again, fortunately) and now the word is that Don the Beachcomber at the Royal Lahaina in Maui is next.

The legendary and mysterious Zombie cocktail was invented by Don the Beachcomber in the 1930s, ostensibly to cure a businessman's hangover.
There's another Zombie recipe that claims to be a Beachcomber original, and it's listed on page 56 of Hawai'i: Tropical Rum Drinks and Cuisine, written posthumously in 2001 by Don's last wife, Phoebe.
I'll also be posting some menus from what I guess was a local Phx restaurant back in the 60s and 70s called "The Islands." The graphics are extremely tiki-laden and the adult beverage menu is a knockout.
