DONAGHADEE, a sea-port, and post-town, and a parish, in the barony of ARDES, county of DOWN, and province of ULSTER, 14 and a half miles (N. by E.) from Belfast, and 94 and a half (N. E.) from Dublin, containing 7627 inhabitants, of which number, 2986 are in the town.
Donaghadee is a creek to the port of Belfast, and has a harbour master and one custom-house officer.
It is a constabulary police station, and the head of a coastguard district, under the control of a resident inspecting commander, which comprises the twelve stations of Hollywood, Bangor, Crawfordsburn, Orlockhill, Groomsport, Donaghadee.

Donaghadee (Domhnach Daoi in Irish) is a Town in County Down, Northern Ireland, situated on the east coast, about 18 miles from Belfast.
Donaghadee is probably best known for its Lighthouse and harbour, there's been a harbour at Donaghadee (or the 'Dee) since at least the 17th century.
Grace Neills, in the centre of Donaghadee, is according to the Guinness Book of Records, Ireland's oldest Public house, opened in 1611 as the 'King's Arms'.

Donaghadee is situated on the Ards Peninsula, approximately seven miles north east of Newtownards, on the Irish Sea coast.
From Donaghadee visitors have the opportunity to enjoy spectacular views across the Irish Sea, where on a clear day you can see all the way to Scotland.
In the harbour is Donaghadee's impressive lighthouse, which was built in 1836 and was the first lighthouse in Ireland to be lit by electricity.

The Donaghadee players and those supporters who were close reckoned this was the winner - only for the referee to say that from where he was standing he could not see, and ruled that there was enough doubt for him to deny the try.

Donaghadee is a growing town on the coast of County Down, 6 miles from the historic monastic town of Bangor and approximately 20 miles from Belfast.
After the Reformation therefore, 'it was only to be expected that Donaghadee, the nearest seaport in Ulster to the Scottish Mainland, should have one of the first Presbyterian congregations'.
After the religious disruptions in 1661 a new 'Meeting House' was built at Killaughy (just outside the town), followed in the early 18th Century by a move by the congregation to another new building in what is still called Meeting House Street, in the town centre.

Donaghadee's decline began when the ferry service was transferred to Larne in 1849.
Nowadays, apart from watching the dulse-gatherers at low tide or fishing activity at the harbour, there's little going on here, and the town's only other claim to fame is that its lighthouse received a lick of paint from Brendan Behan when he was employed after the war by the Commission for Irish Lights.
The middle one, Cross Island, is now a bird sanctuary run by the RSPB, which arranges cruises to it (tel 028/9049 1547); Nelson's Boats in Donaghadee run regular trips to the other two (tel 028/9188 3403, www.kingdomsofdown.com/nelsonsboats; June–Sept).

Right in the middle (the crucial time of around 2.30 to 4.00pm) it was a half-way house of cold, dark and not too pleasant.
This was very appropriate because for Donaghadee, playing Cooke RFC in the Miller McCall Wylie Junior Cup, the rugby was not very different.

The harbour is constructed from limestone from the Moelfre quarries of Angelsey in north Wales, though the outer walls are the local graywacke blasted from a nearby quarry (where Copeland's Marina is now).
Sport is well catered for with an 18 hole golf course, rugby club, tennis club, bowling club and sailing club to name but a few.
The Webmaster for the Rotary Club of Donaghadee is Alistair Johnston, a member of the club.

We are a highly successful netball club with a thriving Senior and Junior section in the North Down area in Northern Ireland.
Donaghadee Netball Club was one of the first clubs set up in the North Down area and was founded in 1994 with just a few keen and enthusiastic players who wanted to go far.
In addition to weekly training and matches we also run a number of lively social events throughout the season such as the Christmas dinner and 'team building' weekend away, its a chance to let our hair down and in many cases to do a bit of fundraising for the club.

 Commissioners of Irish Lights
In spite of the Belfast and Co Down railway reaching Donaghadee in 1861 and the railway to Portpatrick the following year, attention was drawn to a new route between Larne and Stranraer which eventually took over in 1871; an abortive attempt to establish this route was made in 1862 lasting just over a year.
In a letter dated 5th November 1934 the Donaghadee Harbour Commissioners informed the Ballast Board that they were prepared to exhibit a light on the south pier and requested the Board to take it under their care.
Conversion to unwatched electric was effected from 2nd October 1934, Donaghadee thus having the distinction of being the first Irish Lighthouse to be converted to electric.
