Donal Lunny was born in 1947 into a large family in Tullamore before moving to Newbridge, Co Kildare.
Lunny had an influential role in creating The Bothies' high-energy, high-speed sound which even startled rock n' rollers and the band enjoyed a couple of years of lofty success before playing their last gig in 1979.
Donal Lunny's talent and experience was by now in demand among musicians.

 Donal Lunny - a short biography.
Donal Lunny is from Newbridge, Co. Kildare, where in his early years he formed a duo, the Rakes of Kildare with Christy Moore (who also lived in Newbridge at the time), occasionally assisted by Donal's brother Frank on the whistle.
Donal was commissioned to write the title piece, which brings together instruments from various cultures, such as fiddle, Irish harp, African kora, harpsichord, piano, saxophone, harmonica, keyboards and various percussion instruments.
Donal was asked to do a series of music shows for the new Gealic-speaking TV station Telefi/s na Gaeilge (TnaG), for which he used a pretty impressive group of musicians as the house band, including fiddler Nollaig Casey, guitarist Steve Cooney and ace piper John McSherry, and occasionally complemented by Sharon Shannon on accordion.

The core members were Christy, his old school mate Donal Lunny, piper extraordinaire Liam O'Flynn, and Andy Irvine who was a founding member of the groundbreaking Irish group Sweeney's Men in the mid-sixties.
Personnel changes along the way included Johnny Moynihan replacing Donal Lunny (who left to join another band that never got off the ground although he guested on Cold Blow and the Rainy Night) in July of 1973 and Paul Brady stepping in for Christy Moore in 1974.
In 1983, Christy Moore and Donal Lunny left to concentrate on Moving Hearts, with Liam and Andy pursuing solo careers.

Among the highlights of the month were the six nights with the Liberty Belles (Andy Irvine, Donal Lunny, Liam O'Flynn, Paddy Glackin and Noel Hill) when Paul went back to his traditional Irish music period to recreate a concert he had done with the same line up in 1978.
Donal Lunny on bouzouki, Liam O'Flynn on uileann pipes and whistle and Ciaran Tourish on fiddle slotted in and the scene changed to the Russian front during the Napoleonic era with a spirited rendition of another great song.
On to 'You're the One' which saw Mark settling into his requested role as groove master for the rest of the evening down in the band's engine room, and Donal and Ciaran driving things along on the bridge.
