Budge's dominance in the tennis world as an international amateur and professional started in 1937 when he beat Baron Gottfried von Cramm in an Interzonal Davis Cup match in Great Britain at Wimbledon that captured the patriotism and imagination of the United States and others around the world on the eve of World Ware II.
Budge became the first of only five tennis athletes, male or female, in the 20th century and early 21st century to win all four titles of the Grand Slam in one calendar year.
Budge stayed at the top of the professional ranks, but was unable to play with the same style in which he played during his 1938 Grand Slam run because of a nagging shoulder injury sustained early in World War II.
