Donald Byrd: The Hard Bop Homepage
After studying composition in Europe (1963-63) Byrd began a career in fl music education, teaching at Rutgers, the Hampton Institute, Howard University, and (after receiving a law degree, 1976) North Carolina Central University; in 1982 he was awarded a doctorate by Columbia Teachers College.
Following the death of Clifford Brown in 1956, Byrd was for a few years arguably the finest hard-bop trumpeter.
His best-selling album Black Byrd led to the formation of his students into the Blackbyrds, a hit group of the mid-1970s.

Bio: Donald Byrd was considered one of the finest hard bop trumpeters of the post-Clifford Brown era.
Byrd's Blue Note debut was 1958's Off to the Races, and he and Adams collaborated on a series of excellent hard bop dates over the next three years, including Byrd in Hand (1959), At the Half Note Cafe, Vols.
Byrd also began to study African music, inspired partly by the emerging fl-consciousness movement, and became interested in Miles Davis' efforts to woo a younger audience (including Byrd's own students) by experimenting with electronics and funk rhythms.

 DONALD BYRD / ELECTRIC BYRD
Considered by some to be trumpeter Donald Byrd's last worthwhile jazz recording, Electric Byrd is a high-flying relic from 1970.
This album can be understood as Byrd's formidable response to the musical challenges set down by trumpet-rival Miles Davis with his epic Bitches Brew recordings from a year earlier.
Byrd demonstrates on his three originals that he, too, was a force to be reckoned with.

It's also one that choreographer Donald Byrd draws on heavily for his contribution to "colôr-ógraphy, n.
Byrd captures the monumentality of Lawrence's figures, placing the Dayton dancers in friezelike silhouettes reminiscent of Egyptian statuary until they burst into movement.
Byrd's work has so utterly embraced both the formal and spiritual aspects of Lawrence's work that his dances seem to have sprung from the very paint fallen from Lawrence's brush, rebounding from the floor of his studio and onto the stage in human form.

 Donald Byrd (1932 - )
Donaldson Toussaint L'Ouverture Byrd II (born December 9, 1932) is an American jazz and rhythm and blues trumpeter, born in Detroit, Michigan.
Like those artists, trumpeter Donald Byrd experienced scathing attacks by jazz critics when, in the mid-1970s, he moved from electric jazz-fusion to what was basically soul, funk and disco with jazz overtones.
Both Byrd's own albums of the mid-to-late 1970s and albums he produced for his band The Blackbirds (known for hits like "Rock Creek Park," "Walking In Rhythm," "Do it Fluid" and "Happy People") burned up the soul charts and earned him a whole new audience.

Lost in their accusations of "selling out" is the knowledge that Byrd made a conscious decision to direct his music towards a younger audience, whom he saw gravitating towards Sly Stone and James Brown instead of Charlie Parker and John Coltrane.
Powered be the strong title tune and "Sky High," the album introduced the new Byrd band: Deans Parks or David T. Walker on guitar, Jerry Peters and Freddie Perren on keys, Chuck Rainey on bass, flutist Roger Glenn, drummer Harvey Mason, Fonce on clavinet and trumpet, and Byrd on horn and vocals.
Byrd has now relaxed into his status as a legend, doing the occasional performance and continuing his drive for education.

 Donald Byrd: Byrd In Hand
Byrd and Adams were certainly aware of the dynamics of the trumpet/baritone sax relationship as posited by Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker, but their take on it was completely their own.
Byrd’s playing, which was heavily influenced by Clifford Brown, takes the lead, while Adams, playing differently in both tone and style than either of the two contemporary baritone sax models (Mulligan and Serge Chaloff) punctuates the proceedings with his (excuse the pun) peppery commentary.
Byrd’s “Here Am I” is especially beautiful, offering a vamp-punctuated melody somewhat in the manner of Miles Davis’s “So What.” Walter Davis’s “Bronze Dance” has a 28-bar structure alternating a Latin beat with a full-out swing section, a study in contrasts that works well and gives the soloists ample material to work with.

Donald Byrd's transitional sessions from 1969-1971 are actually some of the trumpeter's most intriguing work, balancing accessible, funky, Davis-style fusion with legitimate jazz improvisation.
Electric Byrd, from 1970, is the best of the bunch, as Byrd absorbs the innovations of Bitches Brew and comes up with one of his most consistent fusion sets of any flavor.
Byrd leads his largest fusion group yet (ten to 11 pieces), featuring many of his cohorts of the time (including Jerry Dodgion, Lew Tabackin, and Frank Foster on various woodwinds).

Byrds buffs may remember that when the band first visited England, they were served with an injunction by a British RandB combo called "The Birds." The Birds released four singles on Decca between 1964 and 1966 before breaking up.
Donaldson Toussaint L'Ouverture Byrd II was one of the most distinguished hard bop trumpeters (and an ace on the flugelhorn as well) in the '50s and '60s, when he worked with such luminaries as Art Blakey, Horace Silver, Sonny Rollins, Red Garland, John Coltrane and Dexter Gordon.
Byrd, born in 1917, had played in various square dance bands from his teens, and once he entered politics, he used his fiddling skills to attract attention and win votes.

The music is mostly pretty forgettable despite such top sidemen as tenors Stanley Turrentine and Jimmy Heath, pianist Herbie Hancock and guitarist Kenny Burrell.
Byrd mostly sticks to current pop tunes and most of the songs utilize a rather average vocal group listed as "The Donald Byrd Singers." The arrangements by Claus Ogerman, Byrd and Hancock are unimaginative and these renditions of "House of the Rising Sun," "My Babe" and a few of Hancock's originals are quite forgettable.
