Donald James Gelling CBE CP, CInstSMM MLC (born July 5, 1938) is a current member of the Legislative Council of the Isle of Man and a former Chief Minister of the Isle of Man who served 2 terms as Head of Government.
Gelling is a native Manxman who was born in Santon, a village to the south-west of Douglas.
Gelling served as Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry from 1988 to 1989 and was then appointed to the important role of Minister for Treasury.

Gelling, a bluff, warm, approachable man in his early 60s, began his working life in the motor and heavy construction equipment business.
Gelling feels the system means both parliamentarians and ministers have to work a lot harder on projects because "they have to sway the middle ground rather than sitting back and not caring because they have a huge majority" - no doubt a discreet reference to the reality in Tony Blair's "New Labour" government in Britain.
He is clearly unhappy at the failure of some international observers to distinguish between offshore jurisdictions in terms of the quality of their stewardship of their own affairs and a tendency to lump them all together under the general stereotype of "tax haven,” which he clearly dislikes.

When Donald Gelling MHK became Treasury Minister, much was made of "our" compliance with the requirements of something given the acronym "FATFa".
Gelling after Mec Vannin had pointed out the obvious deficiencies in "our" regulatory regime yet again, it was pointed out to him that with more than 30,000 registered companies in the Isle of Man and a "turn-over" rate exceeding 5,000 p.a., the notion that these were all "legit" was completely laughable.
That was none other than our own Chief Minister, Donald Gelling, responding to a suggestion from David Cannan MHK for a method of extracting a response from the UK to the unsuccessful queries regarding the lack of adequate TV service to the Island.

The Treasury has announced that Treasury Member, Donald Gelling MLC, who already has delegated responsibility for Isle of Man Finance, is to take on delegated political responsibility for the E-Business Division of the Department.
The E-Commerce Division of the Chief Secretary's Office transferred to the Treasury on the 1st April and has recently relocated to co-locate alongside Isle of Man Finance, headed up by Jane Dellar on the second floor of Illiam Dhone House in Circular Road.
"Mr Gelling had been responsible for setting up the e-commerce initiative when he was Chief Minister, I thought he would be the most appropriate Member to take on delegated political responsibility, now that the Division has become part of Treasury".

The Honourable Donald J. Gelling, Chief Minister of the Isle of Man, is to lead a top-level business delegation from the self-governing British dependent territory to the UAE next month.

Ex-Chief Minister Donald Gelling, Treasury Minister Allan Bell and outgoing DTL Chief Executive Terry Toohey have been heavily criticised in the long-awaited Part Two Report of the Commission of Inquiry into Mount Murray.
It rejects a submission by Treasury advocate Andrew Corlett that there were great dangers to the Island's international reputation in the use of the word "corruption" as "inappropriate and unjustified", since it implied that irregularities should be "suppressed" in the interests of the Island's reputation.
Donald Gelling has hit back at the Commission, whilst Onchan MHK Peter Karran, who called for the inquiry, has called on Messrs Gelling and Bell to resign and spoken of the need for urgent political reform.

E-commerce links between the Isle of Man, a self-governing British crown dependency, and the UAE could now be on the cards following a top-level meeting between the island's Chief Minister, the Honourable Donald Gelling and Dubai Internet City CEO, Ahmad Bin Byat.
The Isle of Man's JUPITER project will link the different parts of the Isle of Man's Government and enable both businesses and residents to access government services in the same way that the Dubai government's E-government portal, to be launched on October 28, will provide similar services.
