In 1975, Secretary Evans moved to (additional info and facts about Midland, Texas) Midland, Texas from Houston and began roughnecking on an (A slippery or viscous liquid or liquefiable substance not miscible with water) oil rig for Tom Brown Inc., a large independent energy company now based in Denver.
In 1995 Evans was appointed by then-Governor Bush to the Board of Regents of the (A university in Austin, Texas) University of Texas, serving as Chairman of the Board for the last four years.

U.S. Commerce Secretary Donald L. Evans presented a broad outline of the Bush Administration's approach to international trade in a speech March 27 at the 20th annual conference on U.S.-Turkish relations in Washington.
Our trade policy, Evans said, "leans heavily on the promotion of open markets," and the new administration "is strongly committed to liberalizing global trade" because this approach promotes economic growth, freedom, communication, understanding, and opportunity -- "all of which contribute to the security of nations."
Regarding U.S.-Turkish trade, Evans noted that it totaled $7,000 million in 2000 and is likely to expand in the years to come, despite recent problems in the Turkish economy, which he called "growing pains" from economic reforms.
