Belushi’s turn as Bluto here is rightly the stuff of legend, but if the other actors weren't in buoyant sync, Bluto couldn’t shine as he does – he needs the context provided by the rest of the cast.
Matheson and Riegert make a great razor-tongued double act, McGill has his own brand of eye-widening insanity, and Hulce and Furst are both endearing as newcomers to the kingdom of madness.
Donald Sutherland is very funny as a reasonably hip professor and Vernon, Metcalf, James Daughton and Kevin Bacon all manage to be hilarious as the smarmy fascists theoretically running the show.

The film belongs to Sutherland who governs the action until the inconclusive ending by utilization of his expansive performing skills to create a hateful character with whom one is never less than fascinated, even garnering sympathy.

After viewing "Animal House" in its new 25th anniversary DVD form, the just-released "Double Secret Probation Edition" (Universal Studios Home Video, $19.98, rated R), it's clearer than ever that the film's raging anti-authoritarian attitude was directed in significant ways at the disgraced administration of President Nixon.
"Animal House" may be formally set in 1962, but as actor Tim Matheson, who played Eric "Otter" Stratton, told my colleague J. Freedom du Lac in a recent interview with The Bee, the Dean Wormer character (played with beady-eyed malevolence by John Vernon) represented the corrupt Richard Nixon.
Wormer's secretive actions against the fun-and booze-loving Deltas suggested the Nixon administration's covert actions against its foes, and the dean's turning over the names of the expelled Delta students to their draft boards took on particular ominousness when seen in the aftermath of the Vietnam War.
