Donald Osterbrock, astronomer, dies at 82
Donald Osterbrock, former director of Lick Observatory in California and author of a textbook on gaseous nebulae, has died at 82.
Osterbrock's first major contribution to astronomy occurred while he was a graduate student at the University of Chicago in the early 1950s.
Osterbrock's textbook, "Astrophysics of Gaseous Nebulae and Active Galactic Nuclei" (1989), was published in 1989.

Donald Osterbrock updates classic astrophysics book
Donald Osterbrock, professor emeritus of astronomy and astrophysics, has produced a completely revised edition of his classic book Astrophysics of Gaseous Nebulae and Active Galactic Nuclei.
Osterbrock collaborated with Gary Ferland of the University of Kentucky to update the book, which has been a standard reference book for astrophysicists for more than 30 years.
Osterbrock, a world-renowned research astrophysicist, came to UCSC in 1972 and served as director of Lick Observatory for eight years.

 Professor Donald E. Osterbrock
Donald Osterbrock's main line of research has been observational work on the gas in active nuclei of galaxies--especially radio galaxies, Seyfert galaxies, and X-ray galaxies--and its interpretation.
Osterbrock is now working on the interpretation of these data in terms of the formation and evolution of active galactic nuclei.
The best working hypothesis is that many, if not all, "normal" galaxies contain fl holes in their nuclei, which without new fuel in the form of gas with very nearly zero angular momentum are quiescent.

 FRL Report, 1995-96
Professor Osterbrock is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and has served as Chair for the Academy of the Class of Physical and Mathematical Sciences.
Professor Osterbrock was one of the leaders in using the theoretical data on atoms obtained from these calculations to allow us to understand gaseous nebulae, those regions in space between the stars that shine as a result of stars imbedded in them.
In summary, Professor Osterbrock's contributions to scientific research in a variety of fields, his leadership in the scientific community, and his deep involvement in the educational process have led him to become one of the world's outstanding figures in the field of astronomy in the second half of the 20th century.

Pauper & Prince: Ritchey, Hale, & Big American Telescopes (Donald E. Osterbrock)
Osterbrock's book is the story of the great era of American astronomy dominated by the telescopes of George Ellery Hale, and Hale is necessarily prominent in its pages.
Osterbrock points out that the Ritchey-Chretien reflector model, so ignored and disparaged during his lifetime, eventually won out and now nearly all large telescopes are built using this model.
Osterbrock presents an excellent behind the 'hipe' view of how large expensive telescopes were (and are!) built and who built them.

Powell's Books - Walter Baade: A Life in Astrophysics by Donald E Osterbrock
Written by a fellow astronomer deeply familiar with Baade and his work, this is the first biography of this major figure in American astronomy.
In it, Donald Osterbrock suggests that Baade's greatest contribution to astrophysics was not, as is often contended, his revision of Hubble's distance and age scales for the universe.
"Osterbrock's narrative and the arguments that pervade it advance an original interpretation of one of the twentieth century's most significant astronomers.

One of many strengths of Osterbrock's historical work is his ability to probe behind the published record.
Osterbrock also found correspondence to and from Otto Struve, then president of the International Astronomical Union, discussing whether Shapley should be censured by the IAU and the AAS.
Another letter Osterbrock found was from Ira Bowen, director of the Mount Wilson and Palomar observatories, asking Donald Menzel, acting director at Harvard, to make sure that no more popular articles or news releases were issued crediting Baade's discovery to Shapley.

 Albert Edward Whitford, October 22, 1905–March 28, 2002 | By Donald E. Osterbrock | Biographical Memoirs
Its astronomers were waiting impatiently for a new 120-inch reflector to be finished, which when completed would be the second-largest telescope in the world.
Probably the reasons Whitford was chosen to succeed C. Donald Shane, who was stepping down after 12 years as director, were his drive and mechanical knowledge, demonstrated in getting the Wisconsin 36-inch reflector and its auxiliary instruments completed on schedule.
Two members of the Lick faculty, Olin J. Eggen (UW’s second Ph.D. in astronomy) and Gerald E. Kron (who had earned a master’s degree in astronomy there), knew him especially well, and his research qualifications were extremely high (he had been elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1954).

t is Donald Osterbrock's own experience as director of a world-class observatory that he says gave him the insights he needed to construct his book Yerkes Observatory, 18921950: The Birth, Near Death, and Resurrection of a Scientific Research Institution, published this winter by the U of C Press.
While rich in scientific detail, the book also offers vivid and candid depictions of the strong, sometimes flawed, personalities who combined their energies to make Yerkes the premier astrophysical laboratory in America.
Still, a conflict of some sort was inevitable, for the expectation at that time was for an observatory director to "keep his post until he retired or died.
