  Schon
Donald A. Schon Donald A. Schon was born in Boston and raised in Brookline and Worchester.
Donald Schon's work in The Reflective Practitioner (1983) provides a useful beginning in that his focus on professional practice relates so well to the missions of the university: the ways in which we prepare students for the professions and the ways in which we position the university as an intellectual resource to the broader community.
Schon felt that the experience of the students in any reflective practicum is that they must plunge into the doing, and try to educate themselves before they know what it is they're trying to learn.

Donald Schon (Schön) - learning, reflection and change
Donald Alan Schon (1930-1997) trained as a philosopher, but it was his concern with the development of reflective practice and learning systems within organizations and communities for which he is remembered.
Donald Schon was born in Boston in 1930 and raised in Brookline and Worcester.
Indeed Donald Schon may well have failed to clarify what is involved in the reflective process - and there is a problem, according to Eraut, around time - 'when time is extremely short, decisions have to be rapid and the scope for reflection is extremely limited' (1994: 145).

Literacy & Learning - Action Research
Schon described how reflection-in-action could be used by professionals as a tool to improve their practice.
Schon later noted that it is possible to describe the tacit knowledge implicit in our actions through a process of observation and reflection (Schon, 1987, 26).
Argryis and Schon (1978) note that single-loop analysis is based on a given frame of reference that may be defined and improved, whereas double-loop inquiry is the nature of the frame, the assumptions that underlie it, and investigate whether an alternative frame would be more appropriate.

Donald Schon (1983, 1987) provides a framework that not only addresses these cognitive and organizational barriers, but distinctly illuminates the practice of reflectivity as well.
Schon (1987) defines reflection as knowing-in-action, and explains, "When the practitioner reflects-in-action in a case he [she] perceives as unique, paying attention to phenomena and surfacing his intuitive understanding of them, his [her] experimenting is a once exploratory, move testing, and hypothesis testing.
Schon (1987) challenges teachers to "...move into the center of the learning situation, into the center of their own doubts" (p.

It seems to me that what sociologist Donald Schon observed in the architectural studios of 1985 has not changed a great deal in the past years.
As I read the chapter that was assigned, I began to smile profusely at the way in which Schon described the relationship between the studio master and the student.
I believe Schon's observations of the architectural studio were accurate in every way and his exerpt was also a very enjoyable read.

the learning organization - principles, theory and practice @ the encyclopedia of informal education
We must become able not only to transform our institutions, in response to changing situations and requirements; we must invent and develop institutions which are ‘learning systems’, that is to say, systems capable of bringing about their own continuing transformation.
One of Schon’s great innovations was to explore the extent to which companies, social movements and governments were learning systems – and how those systems could be enhanced.
Crucially Donald Schon then went on with Chris Argyris to develop a number of important concepts with regard to organizational learning.

Donald Schön's theory of reflective practice has garnered unprecedented attention in the field of continuing professional education.
In this paper, I examine Schön's writing on reflective practice and argue that a constructivist orientation is a central, although largely unexplored, underpinning of his work.

Amazon.co.uk: The Reflective Practitioner: How Professionals Think in Action: Books: Donald A. Schon   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
Schon provides information on a subject that many practitioners are aware of but that few know how to put into words; intuition, what it is, and its regular use in daily professional practice.
Because the sum of what a professional knows is greater than the sum of what he is aware he knows -- let alone the totality of what he can articulate -- there is a hidden world of practitioner competence.
I found Schon to be a little repetitive and his examples difficult to fully conceptualize.
