Sinden, in anatomising Hamlet, hits the word "mad" with the grating insistence of the woman who keeps reiterating "knife" in Hitchcock's Blackmail and it is wonderfully in character that it is he who first shifts uneasily in his seat at the disruptiveness of the play scene.
Donald Sinden presents a massive, powerful operator full of habitual authority which is beginning to fray and frazzle at the edges.
Sinden knows that Polonius is a politician to his fingertips; and one of his and Hall's most subtle touches is to show how Polonius's authority is slowly whittled away as the play goes on.

The Peter Hall Company - Reviews - Hamlet
Deadpan and even a tad bitchy, he uses wit as a safeguard against grief and emotions not always kept in check: spitting furiously at Ophelia, he responds to her love with a ferocity bound to prove her undoing.
The rest of the supporting cast is pretty awful, starting with Gina Bellman's impossibly mannered and stagey Ophelia, her mad scene acted on point(!), and a Polonius and Claudius from Sinden and Michael Pennington, respectively, that come out of exactly the sort of old-style ham acting Dillane thankfully leaves behind.
There is very strong support from Donald Sinden's pompously amusing Polonius, Gwen Taylor's over-ripe hausfrau of a Gertrude, Alan Dobie's sepulchral First Gravedigger and even Gina Bellman's bird-like Ophelia (though like almost everyone these days, she overacts the mad scene).

It starred Donald Sinden as Simon Peel, a stuffy, upper-middle class antiques dealer who lives next door to Oliver Smallbridge (Windsor Davies of It Ain't Half Hot, Mum fame), a working-class lad made good, also in the antiques trade.
Never the Twain is a pleasantly predictable antique of the sitcom variety, redeemed by Sinden and Davies' gruff, blustery and persistent antagonism.
It depicts a cosy, never-never world of "dirty weekends", huge suburban houses, borderline homophobic mirth and reliable puns on "genes" and "jeans"--the sort of series in which characters greet surprising news by spraying a mouthful of tea halfway across the room.
