Donald Swann, niedawno zmarły artysta i kompozytor (odpuścił nas 23 marca 1994 roku w wieku 70 lat), zasłynął jako autor i kompozytor piosenek kabaretowych.
Gdy Donald ukończył studia na filologii rosyjskiej i klasycznej, zdecydował że zostanie profesjonalnym kompozytorem i akompaniatorem.
Donald Swann zmarł dwa lata później, w 1994 roku.

The duo "Flanders and Swann" was composed of British actor and singer Michael Flanders (1922–1975) and composer and linguist Donald Swann (1923–1994) who joined forces to write and perform comic songs in the two-man revues At The Drop Of A Hat and At The Drop Of Another Hat.
An unusual feature of their act was that, due to Flanders' having suffered polio in 1943, both men remained seated for their shows: Swann remained behind his piano, and Flanders was wheelchair-bound.

Fascinated by the Greek islands and particularly Casos, on which he found both peace and disquiet, he used Greek folksong and popular melodies as the basis for these joyful yet thoughtful songs, orchestrated by John Jansson.
We are very fortunate to have secured a tape of these pieces, made by Donald for his own use on his beloved Bluthner piano at his Battersea home, and this CD includes this rare and valuable recording.

Don't know if you know that the poem was set to music by Donald Swann in his compilation of songs that were poems in LOTR.
There's a nice introduction to the music book, explaining how Swann came to write the melodies and that Tolkien approved all, but had him revise the music for "Namarie." Tolkien hummed what was a Gregorian chant and Swann basically used that with a bit added by Swann.
The BBC recording of the radio series, originally broadcast 21 years ago, featured this poem spoken over music as part of the finale of the radio dramatisation, but it was not included on the separately released soundtrack album by Stephen Oliver.

The wordplay of Flanders is just fabulous, the wit perfect, Swann's music light but expertly arranged, and they're not afraid to make references that are, for want of a better word, "intellectual" - in other words, for all the fun and silliness (and they really are very funny), they treat their audience like grown-ups.
I too would place Flanders and Swann in the same corpus as Gilbert and Sullivan, Wilde, Jerome K Jerome, Chesterton and Wodehouse, but that doesn't mean this box set can't sit next to your Franz Ferdinand or Scissor Sisters albums - the criterion isn't whether something is modern bur whether its good.
I am proud to say I once saw Donald Swann on stage about a year before his death (and, thanks to a kindly employee, even have his autograph).
