Obituary : Donald Watson - the first English vegan   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-29)
Watson left school at 14, became a woodwork apprentice and later a woodwork teacher.
Watson spent his retirement in Keswick, Cumbria, fell-walking and cycling, working as a guided walks leader and caring for his acre of land, upon which he would use only a fork, never a spade, for fear of harming the earthworms.
Living to a healthy old age was important to Watson because he felt the need to show the healthiness of the vegan way of life, and because he refused to take any medicines owing to their link with animal testing and vivisection.

Donald Watson - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Donald Watson (September 2, 1910 – November 16, 2005), founder of the Vegan Society and inventor of the word vegan, was born in South Yorkshire, England into a meat-eating family.
Donald’s parents, however, encouraged and supported their three children in determining their own paths in life, a liberal approach which enabled Donald to formulate ideas which were both challenging and controversial.
Donald continued his life quietly in Keswick where he taught for twenty-three years; also working with the Cumbrian Vegetarian Society, campaigning through the local press on matters important in his home community, and, together with his family, enjoying his love of the mountains.

Donald, like Watson, is 5ft 9in and will have to learn to ride the punches that come his way in the majors.
All this recent history suggests that it was a remarkable achievement rather than a failure for Donald, 27, to finish second at the TPC (after missing the cut on his two previous appearances) and third on his Masters debut in the space of a fortnight.
Donald is finding it easier to chase than to lead at the moment, but a few months ago he found even chasing to be hard going in a major.
