  CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Donatus of Fiesole
Donatus was born in Ireland, of a noble family.
The best known of these is the twelve-line poem in which he describes the beauty and fertility of his native land, and the prowess and piety of its inhabitants.
Donatus also composed an epitaph in which he alludes to his birth in Ireland, his years in the service of the princes of Italy (Lothair and Louis), his episcopate at Fiesole, and his activity as a teacher of grammar and poetry.

 Donatus
It remained in use throughout the European Middle Ages, and its author's name in the forms donat and donet came to mean "grammar" or any kind of "lesson." The larger work, in three parts, deals with the elements of grammar, the eight parts of speech, and errors and beauties of language.
Donatus has little claim to originality, but no grammar is cited so often, and many commentaries were written on it.
Aelius Donatus is to be distinguished from Tiberius Claudius Donatus, probably late 4th century AD, author of the Interpretationes Vergilianae, a commentary on the Aeneid.

 Aelius Donatus - LoveToKnow 1911
AELIUS DONATUS, Roman grammarian and teacher of rhetoric, flourished in the middle of the 4th century A.D. The only fact known regarding his life is that he was the tutor of St Jerome.
It is extant in the form of an Ars Minor, which only treats of the parts of speech, and an Ars Major, which deals with grammar in general at greater length.
Aelius Donatus is to be distinguished from Tiberius Claudius Donatus, the author of a commentary (Inter pretationes) on the Aeneid (of far less value than that of Servius), who lived about fifty years later.

August 1: Donatists and Christian North Africa
Donatus considered Caecilian an illegal bishop, because he had supposedly gone so far as to picket against martyrs held in prison and because one of the bishops who consecrated Caecilian was considered a traitor.
For instance, the bishops of Numidia joined Donatus because they felt slighted by the church and a leading woman joined him because she resented Caecilian for rebuking her for kissing the relics of a saint not recognized by the church.
Donatus asked, "What has the emperor to do with the church?" But the effect of their breakaway was to weaken North Africa so that it was more easily overrun by first the Vandals and then by the Muslims.

Federica CICCOLELLA Learning Greek in the Renaissance: the Case of the Greek Donatus
The Greek Donatus was not deemed worthy of a printed edition during the Renaissance.
All the previous attempts to establish the study of ancient Greek in the West had failed because of the lack of an appropriate teaching methodology for non-native speakers, as well as of grammar books and dictionaries designed for this purpose.
Greek, being a language of culture reserved for few privileged students, continued to be taught in Latin, whereas the increase in the use of vernacular languages heavily influenced the teaching of Latin from the fourteenth century onwards.
