Open Source Definition (OSD) presents an open-source philosophy, and further defines a boundary on open source software on how it is to be used, modified or redistributed.
Critics of 'open source' said that it fosters an ambiguity of a different kind such that it confuses the mere availability of the source with the freedom to use, modify, and redistribute it.
Openness is a term that has evolved now to refer to projects that are open to anyone and everyone to contribute to, before and/or after the actual programming.

 Open Discectomy
Open discectomy uses surgery to remove part of the damaged disc and thus relieve the pressure on the nerve tissue and alleviate the pain.
Open discectomy is usually performed under general anesthesia (the patient is unconscious) and typically requires a one-day hospital stay.
Possible complications from open discectomy include bleeding, infection, spinal fluid leak, injury to the veins and arteries near the spine, or injury to the nerve tissue of the spine or its surrounding protective layer (the dura mater).

Open carpal tunnel release surgery is usually done under local anesthetic as an outpatient same-day surgery.

 | Open Source | ZDNet.com
Open source is not a political issue, but it sometimes plays one on TV.
Battered by a growing open source threat (mySQL, Ingres) on the one hand and an emboldened Oracle (buying PeopleSoft and Seibel) on the other, executives like Shai Agassi (right), president of the company's product and technology group, are in the position of the lawyer who has neither the facts nor the law on his side.
As with many corporations, open source in this case is just a cute name for doing what should have been done already, making use of what people are actually telling you before trying to ferret out what they may be thinking.

 Adam Bosworth's Weblog: Open Source
Microsoft has long had a history of promising to "open source" things, then to turn around at the last minute and place one or more restrictive licenses upon the projects that sorely limited what could be done with this "open source" code.
You have to realize that significant part of the current open source is "donated" by companies that were killed by it - just due to the people rather giving it away for free and donating their time then to see it die.
Open source claims that it let it happen by itself - but it is simply not true.

 Javalobby News - 2004/11/16
Since before JavaOne I’ve both asked and heard the question, “What can be done with an Open Source Java that cannot be done today?” Now, it seems that this question has been publicly asked, as Onno Kluyt, chairman of Sun’s JCP has just done in a recent article at MacWorld UK.
Open Office cannot really have Java as a core component because we don't have an open source implementation.
Go to open source events and tell everybody: you can do more today with the Classpath implementation (even though it’s incomplete) than you can do with many of the traditional open source languages.

 "Reboot!" by Nicholas Thompson
But two extraordinary changes are making open source substantially more plausible as a development and research model for 2000 than it was for 1990--and they'll make it even more so for 2010.
This is why open source has come first and most prominently to computer programming: a profession where almost all of the development is intellectual, not physical, and where people have been connected over the Internet for more than 20 years.
Open source has created the fastest growing operating system in the world and it's done so by capitalizing on changes in technology that will almost certainly seem commonplace in a decade or two.

It has been a pleasure to see open source becoming more accepted, even though it tends to be the people who are deeply interested in computers who try out Linux, BSD, etc. Unfortunately, I have also noticed that there is a rather large problem in the open source community.
However, if we ever want open source to succeed among the common people, this is something we're all going to have to work at stopping.
Some open source programmers are so lame that they actively attempt to ape the style of corporations, putting out press releases full of corporate jargon as if this is going to impress someone.
