  Doneraile Wildlife Park
The fine entrance gates at the porticoed gated lodge on the Turnpike Road, north of Doneraile town, Co. Cork, mark the formal entrance to a great landscaped estate - 160 hectares of parklands with mature groves of deciduous trees and a number of deer herds.
The greater part of the work at Doneraile was undertaken in the early eighteenth century.
In the hollows of the landscape, water is the important element, artificially diverted into canals, cascades, and ponds, and spanned by elegant stone bridges.

Canon Sheehan's grave and statue in the grounds of the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Doneraile.
Doneraile was a large country parish, much different from the parishes he had served in up to then.
His early years in Doneraile coincided with the last stages of the Land War and the introduction of the Land Acts.He played a major part in the negotiations between the tenant farmers and the landlords in the parish.

DONERAILE, a market and post-town, and a parish (formerly a parliamentary borough), in the barony of FERMOY, county of CORK, and province of MUNSTER, 21 miles (N. by W.) from Cork, and 132 (S. from Dublin; containing 6940 inhabitants, of which number, 2652 are in the town.
He purchased the Doneraile estate of Sir Walter Welmond and John Spenser (son of the poet), which purchase was subsequently confirmed by the crown, and the estate created a manor.
The parish is in the diocese of Cloyne, and is a perpetual curacy, forming part of the union of Templeroan, or Doneraile, in the patronage of the Bishop; the rectory is impropriate in Edward Giles, Esq., of Park, near Youghal.

Doneraile (Irish: Dún ar Aill) is a town in County Cork, Ireland.
Doneraile is also the home of a famous "Hedge Witch" named Bev Richardson, who is sometimes referred to by locals as the Wizard of Doneraile.
Bev is originally from the Isle of Mann and as a child ran errands for Gerald Gardner.

The Church of St Mary's, Doneraile and the bells within it owes a lot to the generosity of the St Leger family.
The course was between the steeple of nearby Buttevant Church and that of St Mary's Doneraile, and this lead to the term "Steeple chasing".
The steeple itself was blown down in the early part of the nineteenth century and was replaced by the present tower.

So it was not surprising that as this troubled decade drew to a close, the large ascendancy landowners in the Doneraile area had every reason to be fearful for their property and their lives.
In the year 1829 the Whiteboy movement around Doneraile had come to a peak, and there was said to be a conspiracy among them to assassinate three important local members of the Establishment.
Doneraile went on to ask for authority to send Patrick Daly to Dublin, under the charge of Chief Constable Crossley, so that he could be examined by Crown lawyers, and could be kept safely, where no other influences could be used to stop him coming forward as a witness.

Emily Ursula Clare Saint Leger, the daughter of the Fourth Viscount Doneraile, was the wife of Bernard Edward Barnaby Ftzpatiick Baron Castletown of Upper Ossory.
Canon Sheehan told Wendell in March 1911 that Doneraile Court had had to be let and that the deer in the park had been killed and their meat sold.
Doneraile court was one of the Irish "great houses" built by the Anglo-Irish ascendancy and the seat of the Saint Leger family after whom the famous Saint Leger Stakes horse race was named.

I have found several sources which confirm that Elizabeth, the daughter of Arthur St. Leger, first Viscount Doneraile, was the only female Freemason, but I have not found any account that contains the detail of her hiding in a clock.
When she was apprehended, death was first thought to be the only possible issue, but her father, Lord Doneraile, prevailed and she was sworn in.
She is supposed (at age seventeen) to have been a witness to a Masonic meeting in her father's house and to have been initiated to ensure secrecy.

Doneraile became the Administrative seat of power in Munster with the arrival of William St. Leger, Lord President of Munster, in the mid 1630’s.
The basement suggest the present Doneraile Court is an addition to the older house but only the eye of an expect would notice that the upper storey was added in 1725 and the bow windows in the middle of the century.
Viscount Doneraile was one of the godfathers of Thomas Arthur Corlett (baptised 26 Sep. 1734) in the parish of Lezayre, Isle of Man. Thomas Arthur Corlett was the son of Robert Corlett of Loughan-e-Yeigh and Elizabeth Parr.

 Doneraile Park Stream on Flickr - Photo Sharing!
Water flows through Doneraile Park on a cold November afternoon.
Despite the late season, leaves still cling to the branches of nearby trees although they've turned golden-orange and make a beautiful covering on the ground.
I'll have to get a good shot of Doneraile Court next time I'm down there.
