  A. Bradley Dongas III   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Attracted by the UA's exaggerated "party school" reputation, Dongas soon learned that he would actually have to study, so after two weeks he switched his major to mass communications.
Before assuming his duties at The Weekly, Dongas spent a decade researching the effects of various drugs and industrial solvents.
The father of numerous children, some of whom he actually supports, Dongas' hobbies include drinking beer, small mammalian taxidermy and driving around Tucson late at night with no clothes on.

CENTRE   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
It first appears in Australian English in 1902 (a borrowing during the Boer War?), and it has come to mean ‘a broad shallow often circular depression most commonly found in dry country’.
A quotation from 1913 describes an Australian donga: ‘Scattered over the plain for about twelve miles westward of Ooldea, are slight depressions having the appearance of shallow lake beds, where the soil is softer and the low monotonous blue bush gives place to thick rank grasses and clumps of stunted scrub.
The stumbling block to this argument seems to be a 1900 quotation from Truth(Sydney): ‘And dossed in dongas ev’ry night/Daown [sic] in the old Dermain [sic]!’ It has been assumed that this is the first evidence for the ‘makeshift dwelling’ sense.

Dongas usually occur near the bottom of slopes and are caused by the removal of soil and soft rock as a result of concentrated runoff that forms a deep channel or gully.
As the soil from these channels is washed away, channels or miniature dongas are formed in the field.
Wind erosion occurs when the land surface is left bare in regions that are arid enough, as a result of low rainfall, to allow the soil to dry out, and flat enough to allow the wind to carry the soil away over several consecutive days.

Rennies Wetland Project - Press Releases
Montrose - In the valley in the former Qwa Qwa homeland near Harrismith, cattle and sheep huddle in a narrow, lush strip of land, remnants of a once vast wetland rich in bird life and reeds.
Timber plantations encroach on these areas and roads are built through wetlands, causing erosion or halting the flow of water, drying and eventually destroying the area.
The project aimed to resilt and reclaim dongas in the wetland caused by water flowing over the highly erosive soil.

The Donga Tribe was a group of 15-20 young people who lived for most of 1992 on Twyford Down (see Campaigns) to try to stop the land being destroyed for the M3 motorway.
'Dongas' is the Matabele word for the same type of man-made gullies and became the local word for the trackways.
Those who came together to protect and live on the land ‘acquired’ the name 'The Donga Tribe', and this self-identification with the land quickly became explicitly tied to their political and spiritual beliefs.

 Hydrology/Hydrogeology of Dongas
In the agricultural areas of Swaziland, the erosion of surficial materials results in the formation of extensive gully systems called "dongas".
The presence of dongas strongly increases run-off and, therefore, groundwater recharge to aquifers is considerably reduced.
Project objectives not achieved included: determining the contribution of gully erosion to the sediment budget of rivers, lakes, and reservoirs; identifying remedial measures for reducing gullying and increasing groundwater recharge and storage; and strengthening groundwater research and basin management capabilities at the Ministry of Natural Resources.

For those with faded memories or those not old enough to remember, the violent, early morning eviction of the Dongas tribe's original protest camp on Twyford Down by a flourescent yellow clad army of Group 4 thugs was the initial spark that ignited the whole 1990's direct action roads protest movement.
One of these ancient monuments was the Dongas, narrow parallel trackways worn into the landscape over centuries by the passing feet of drovers and their herds travelling to Winchester.
