Staten Island is one of the five boroughs of New York City, located on an island of the same name on the west side of the Narrows at the entrance of New York Harbor.
Staten Island is separated from Long Island by the Narrows and from mainland New Jersey by the Arthur Kill and the Kill Van Kull.
Staten Island is home to a surprising variety of museums: the Alice Austen House Museum, the Conference House, the Garibaldi-Meucci Museum, Historic Richmond Town, Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art, the John Noble Collection, Sandy Ground Historical Museum, Snug Harbor Cultural Center, the Staten Island Children's Museum, and the Staten Island Museum.

Not only will Island animals stay overnight, but those not adopted or claimed within the required 48 hour period will be injected with lethal doses of sodium pentobarbital and put to sleep.
Pavis and fellow animal lovers on Staten Island have already collected hundreds of signatures in an effort to get a referendum on the November election ballot that would take animal care and control out of the hands of the Department of Health, which currently holds the CACC contract.
Indeed there are an estimated 5,000 strays on Staten Island alone and all factions agree that controlling the city's animal population is a key element to successful animal care.

In addition, WNV has been confirmed in 54 pools of mosquitoes (46 in Staten Island, 6 in Manhattan, 1 in the Bronx and 1 in Queens).

Her family had long-standing connections to Staten Island and she was a resident for much of her adult life.
The collection was donated to the College of Staten Staten Island by Theodora DuBois Paul and Eliot DuBois, the children of Theodora DuBois, in 1992.

A grass-roots campaign, which included thousands of Staten Islanders, has succeeded in getting a referendum on the upcoming election ballot that would dramatically change how animal care and control is handled in New York City.
Patty Pavis, of Dongan Hills [Staten Island], said she had worked personally with five or six local advocates to collect about 3,500 signatures.
However, the agency, which picked up the contract in 1995 from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), has come under a flurry of criticism since an eight-month City Council investigation released earlier this year concluded that the agency was not doing enough to control the city's animal population.
