Al bleef Van Dongen naast zijn hoofdtaal Frans ook Nederlands spreken, al kwam hij nog wel eens naar Nederland, en ontmoette hij graag Nederlandse kunstenaars in Parijs, zijn verfransing was toch onmiskenbaar in zijn kunst en levensgedrag.
Na de bevrijding van Frankrijk bleef Van Dongen een bekend schilder in Parijs, die tot op hoge leeftijd, ook in zijn kunst, actief was: een scherp waarnemer en fel levensgenieter, de 'verslaggever' van de uitgaande wereld.
P: Werk van Van Dongen is behalve in buitenlandse musea en particuliere collecties - vooral in Amerika - te vinden in Museum Boymans-van Beuningen in Rotterdam, Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, Haags Gemeentemuseum en Stedelijk van Abbe Museum te Eindhoven.

Hieruit ontstond uiteindelijk de naam Dongen voor de plaats en Donge voor het riviertje, dat uitmondt bij Geertruidenberg in de Amer, een vertakking van de Maas.
