The Tomahawk Land Attack Missile (TLAM) is a long-range, all-weather, subsonic cruise missile with stubby wings.
Each missile is stored and launched from a pressurized canister that protects it during transportation and storage and acts as a launch tube.
The missile is launched and steered for the first few seconds of flight by a solid fuel booster with steering vanes in its exhaust.

Encyclopedia: Ballistic-missile   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
In order to cover large distances ballistic missiles must be launched very high into the air or in space, in a sub-orbital spaceflight; for intercontinental missiles the altitude halfway is ca.
Long and medium range ballistic missiles are generally designed to deliver nuclear warheads because their payload is too limited for conventional explosives to be efficient, and because the extreme heat of re-entry would damage chemical or biological payloads.
The first ballistic missile was the V-2 rocket, developed by Nazi Germany in the 1940s, which was successully launched for the first time on October 3, 1942 and used for the first time in operation on September 8, 1944.

MIRV capability would potentially enable Chinese missiles to overwhelm the proposed U.S. missile shield, which at present is only designed to knock out a very small number of incoming warheads.
China has had three new mobile strategic missiles in development since the mid-1980s, including the road-mobile DF-31, a DF-31 follow-on, and a submarine launched equivalent, the JL-2, the CIA report said.
However, if Beijing added MIRV-carrying missiles to its nuclear arsenal, analysts say that such a shield would be largely ineffective in the event of a nuclear strike launched by China.

By 1958 Tsien had finalized the plans of the Dongfeng missile which was first successfully launched in 1964 just prior to China's first successful nuclear weapon's test.

The missiles used very cold liquid propellant that could only be kept in the missile for a short length of time before icing became a problem.
It had been intended to site the missiles in underground (Military installation consisting of an underground structure where ballistic missiles can be stored and fired) silos capable of withstanding a one megaton blast at a distance of half a mile (800 m), silos being an original British innovation later exported to the USA.
These silos would have protected the missile from a first-strike attack while the missile was being fuelled.

Chinese leaders have yet to decide when to conduct live test-firing of the missile, which could be deployed in five years, the report said.
U.S. officials have said China is not expected to deploy the Dongfeng-31 missile for several years, although one expert said the missile's public display indicates it could be put into service in two years.

Taiwan has the capability to produce medium range ground-to-ground missiles, a newspaper said Wednesday, amid reports that rival China is set to test fire a Dongfeng-31 ballistic missile.
Progress in the development of Taiwan's anti-missile weaponry, known as ATBM (anti-tactical ballistic missile), has brought the island to the doorstep of the club armed with ground-to-ground missiles, the Liberty Times said quoting a military source.

The Cox report said the solid-fuel JL II is a version of the land- launched Dongfeng 31 missile, which it said could be tested this year and deployed by early 2002.
Both missiles, the report suggested, would incorporate a variety of technologies obtained from US sources and carry a warhead using technology the report said had been stolen from US national laboratories.

China Flies One New, Threatening Missile   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
The newspaper notes that the U.S. lacks any missile defense capable of intercepting either of these "second-generation" Chinese missiles -- or, indeed, three others also being developed and/or fielded (the DF-21, DF-41 and the Julang 2, a submarine-launched version of the DF-31).
If an accurate characterization of the DF-25's capabilities, this missile would be capable of holding at risk virtually all of the United States' Asian allies and forward deployed forces in the region.
Even more sobering is the reality that the Chinese have already simulated missile attacks on American bases and allied targets in Asia, attacks that might in the future be carried out by an unknown quantity of DF-25s.
