In the West, Shanghai has also been spelled Schanghai (in German), Sjanghai (in Dutch) and Changhaï (in French), but since the 1990s the Hanyu Pinyin spelling of Shanghai has become universal throughout the world.

Blenda Femenías (PhD, University of Wisconsin-Madison) is a Visiting Assistant Professor, Department of Anthropology, University of Pittsburgh, and a Research Associate at the Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology, Brown University.
She also taught at the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth, from 1988–2002, where for ten years she was Director of MFA Programs in Artisanry, Fine Arts, and Design at the College of Visual and Performing Arts.
