Selecting the Dongting Lake region of Yangtze River, China as study area, using remote sensing and GIS techniques, this paper examines land use change and its impacts on flood risks at a pixel level within a 50 year time span.
Based on correlation analysis, the paper argues that the extensive reclamation in the region, especially in the immediate surrounding area, and the subsequent significant reduction of the water area are the main factors contributing to the increasing flood losses.
The paper concludes that a land use structure in harmony with the hydrologic procession of wetland is desirable to reduce future flood risk in the Dongting Lake Region of Yangtze River.
