  Dongzhimen - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dongzhimen (Simplified Chinese: 东直门; Traditional Chinese: 東直門; pinyin: Dōngzhímén; Manchu: Tob dergi duka) is the name of one of the gates in the old city walls of Beijing, it is now a transportation node in Beijing.
West of Dongzhimen is Guijie, or "Food vessel street" (Dongzhimen Inner Street), extremely well-known to locals as a food street.
East of Dongzhimen is Dongzhimen Outer Street, which connects with the Embassy area and ultimately to the 3rd Ring Road and the National Agricultural Exhibition Hall.

However, a city official said Beijing Dongzhimen Airport Express Rail, the company set up by the city in July 2001 to build and operate the line, planned to use wheeled subway trains with a linear propulsion system similar to that adopted by the southern city of Guangzhou.
Beijing Dongzhimen Airport Express Rail, the NDRC and Beijing's transport and city planning departments declined to comment on construction plans for the line or give details of how it would be owned or operated.

After the foundation of the People's Republic of China, the government wanted to move the diplomatic district outside of the inner city and Sanlitun was chosen as the area where foreign legations and embassies were to be reallocated in the late 1950s.
San li means "three li", and a li was 0.5 km -- thus, Sanlitun was 1.5 km away from Dongzhimen Gate.
Sanlitun's bar business grew when, along with the reforms of the late 1970s and early 1980s, bar serving at first to expats and later to locals as well started to grow, first in international hotels, and then outside of hotels as well.
