Topic: Donita Sparks

In the News (Wed 23 Dec 09)

Smell Tha Noize - LA Weekly November, 1999
While Sparks urges the crowd to be more responsive, and Gardner doles out eye contact like it’s endangered goods, and probationary bassist Tanaka, if she wants to keep the job, knows she damn well better act like she’s playing Madison Square Garden, Dee Plakas just fucking rocks.
DONITA: Well, we started out with Ministry for the first six dates, and that was really fun and very cush because we were the opening act and there’s not all the pressure of being the headliner.
Sparks, recalled fondly as a Weekly art-department prankster, could also make co-workers cry ("She was like the mean girl on the school playground," recalls one).

CNN - Fierce feminists L7 rant on with live album - December 11, 1998
Sparks: We don't like many of those singers or very much of their music, because they seem to be very mainstream with a fake edge.
Sparks: We're between labels right now and it worked out great because we've wanted to put something out an indie label for a long time, and would never have been able to do that if we were with a major studio, which wouldn't allow us to release anything on an indie label.
Sparks: We started it because we were disturbed by what was happening with bombings and such at clinics.

 L7 Lyrics
The band was formed in 1985 by Donita Sparks and Suzi Gardner, who were later joined by Jennifer Finch and Dee Plakas.
The band gained a certain amount of notoriety for their performance at the 1992 Reading Festival, when Donita Sparks removed her tampon on-stage and threw it into the crowd in protest against the missiles being thrown by the crowd.
Donita Sparks is currently pursuing her own solo career, along with drummer Dee Plakas and two other guitarists.

 Phoenix - News - Wargasm - phoenixnewtimes.com
Though the group -- Sparks, guitarist Suzi Gardner and drummer Dee Plakas -- has been together since 1985, it has endured the departure of bassist and founding member Jennifer Finch (as well as that of her touring replacement Gail Greenwood, since replaced by Janis Tanaka).
Sparks knows all too well that the contributions of female rockers -- the ones that actually rock, in more than name only -- have been marginalized, swept up in the rush of promotional and mainstream press hype that has proclaimed and celebrated the rise of women in music over the past few years.
For Sparks and the band, the decision to stake out their own piece of the record biz was a practical one, not one born of an unrealistic, though common, indier-than-thou attitude.

Ordinarily, it would be unthinkable to put out a live album without your biggest hit, but I've always thought that one possible reason had to do with comments Donita Sparks has made about how it's not their strongest song live and how difficult it is to sing live.

The opening sets by the generic SoCal punk band THE JOHNS (I was hoping that X mainstay John Doe would be one of the members, but unfortunately, it was not to be) and former L7 singer/guitarist DONITA SPARKS (who unfortunately sacrificed the fiery intensity of her old band for generic bar-band rock) were disappointing.
But fortunately we only had to endure a few songs by Sparks and her band, since we got there a bit late.

 L7 - Music Downloads - Online
Bio: Although often lumped in with the "Seattle Movement" of the early '90s (due to their sound, look, and attitude), the all-female punk band L7 hailed originally from Los Angeles.
The seeds for L7 (whose name was taken from a slang term in the '50s that meant someone who was a "square") were planted in 1985, when a pair of guitarists/singers, Suzi Gardner and Donita Sparks, decided to start a band.
Over the next few years, the group extended its lineup to include bassist Jennifer Finch and drummer Dee Plakas, as their sound grew more and more metallic, yet never losing the attack and simplicity of punk.

Phoning from her home in L.A., Sparks sounds both relieved to be free of the major-label grind and energized by the labor of managing her own affairs.
Still, Sparks and Gardner occasionally chime together for surprisingly sweet, almost girlish harmonies, and their guitars chatter playfully on the edges.
Sparks credits the more aurally daring tracks (the tinny-yet-tender "Little One," the sampling hi-fi of "Freeway") to the mixing prowess of Bongload's Tom Rothrock and Rob Schnapf (Beck, Foo Fighters, Elliott Smith).
