 Barnes & Noble.com - Bound - Donna Jo Napoli - Hardcover
While remaining true to the fairytale elements, Napoli endows each character here with three dimensions: the stepmother, for instance, is the number two wife of a recently deceased master potter, so she, understandably, puts her own daughter's welfare ahead of that of her stepdaughter, Xing Xing.
Napoli manages to grant Xing Xing an independence that remains authentic to her time, and creates both an adventure and a coming-of-age story that will have readers racing to the finish.
Napoli retains the pattern of the traditional Chinese tale with only a few minor changes: she sets the story in the northern province of Shaanxi during the Ming dynasty rather than in a minority community in southern China.

Napoli redraws Stepmother as an understandable, if not likable, figure who behaves as she does for very good reasons: ideology, jealousy, and an anxiety for Wei Ping's and her own wellbeing, for which she is willing to sacrifice Xing Xing's.
Napoli rewrites a tale that traditionally takes place, once upon a time, in a kingdom far away, with an unflinching honesty that comes with its own brand of wisdom, logic, and magic.
Donna Jo Napoli truly captures a bit of both worlds in her Novel, truly inspiring readers of all ages to never stop dreaming.

Teenreads.com -- BEAST by Donna Jo Napoli
BEAST, Donna Jo Napoli's latest fairy tale retelling, is a treat for both the senses and the intellect.
Based on Charles Lamb's 1811 poetic version, in which the hero is of Persian descent, Napoli follows Lamb's lead by setting her story in an exotic land, where roses, gardens, verse, and lions play important roles in a rich cultural backdrop.
Though labeled YA fiction, adults will also delight in Napoli's linguistic knowledge (the text is punctuated with Farsi, Arabic, and Latin) as well as her depiction of Islamic and Persian traditions and her excellent storytelling ability.

Donna Jo Napoli uses an unusual setting and perspective to retell "Beauty and the Beast" in her new novel titled simply Beast.
Napoli draws on a less well-known version of the tale as a departure point for her novel, a poem by Charles Lamb identifying the unfortunate beast as Prince Orasmyn of Persia.

Napoli has written a grotesquely powerful reimagining of the familiar German legend (and Robert Browning poem) about the Pied Piper of Hamelin.

An introduction to linguistic methodology and linguistic theory, this unique book introduces readers to the study of language and to the manner in which linguists think and approach their material.
It differs from similar books in that Napoli focuses on the five core topics of linguistics: (phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics), rather than attempting to treat the full range of associated topics (including areas such as language acquisition, psycholinguistics, and computational linquistics).
