JS Online: Donna Murphy is talk of the town
Murphy is a dream of a performer, as witnessed by her Tony-winning turns in Stephen Sondheim's "Passion" and the most recent revival of "The King and I," but her name up to now has been unknown beyond the borders of Shubert Alley.
By contrast, when Russell triumphed in the original "Wonderful Town" and turned it into a box office smash beginning in 1953, she was a bona fide name who had been a movie favorite for 17 years.
The best scenario, of course, would be that the current love-letter reviews and Murphy's own incandescent wit and talent will turn her into a genuine star, someone as alluring at the box office as she is right now on the stage of the Al Hirschfeld.
