 Donnie Ray Albert: Reviews
The depth of Albert’s baritone and variety of its timbres vividly colored his splendid singing.
Albert has already appeared on the Jubilee stage as an ingratiating Porgy in Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess and a statuesque Jokanaan in Strauss’s Salome.
"Albert is a spectacular singer who combined a capacious stage presence with a voice that could capture the pathos and vulnerability of the Dutchman as well as his force and fury."

 Independent News - Becoming Porgy
It was 1976, almost a year before Albert's ground-breaking performance in the Grammy Award-winning production of Gershwin¹s 'Porgy and Bess.' And Albert was trying desperately to tap into the passion that fuels his crippled-beggar character Porgy - a role that catapulted the dramatic baritone from an up-and-coming performer into an opera superstar.
The Dallas-based Albert says he flashes back "more often than not" to the image of that man - and his acclaimed first performance with the Houston Grand Opera - when he reprises his career-defining role.
Albert says the concert performance, minus the onstage theatrics, is more satisfying to him as a performer.

On Saturday, Albert opens in Pittsburgh Opera's "Fidelio" as the villainous Don Pizarro -- a plum of a role in which the character is a corrupt politician (originally a regional governor in 18th-century Spain) determined to murder a personal enemy he has had imprisoned.
Albert got his start in Houston Grand Opera's historic 1976 touring production of Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess," but that early success became a double-edged sword.
Albert is definitely not a "little guy." His imposing physique has been an asset on stage, whether as the crippled Porgy or the evil Pizarro.
