Calling himself Donnie Brasco, and posing as a diamond expert, he befriends "Lefty Guns" Ruggiero (Al Pacino), a low-level mob hit man whose personal life is in tatters, and Dominick Napolitano (Michael Madsen).
Cersani had dealings with Donnie Brasco from back in 1972 and was brought up on racketeering charges in 1982 that were brought on by the Donnie Brasco investigation.

Donnie's wife is kept out of sight from the mob, but Maggie (Anne Heche) is always present in the story as her husband changes before her eyes; as their daughters grow up knowing Daddy from occasional and secretive night visits.
Donnie Brasco is not a cops and robbers story in the traditional mold.

Joseph D. Pistone (born 1940), alias Donnie Brasco, was an FBI agent who worked undercover for 5 years to infiltrate the Bonanno family, a branch of the Mafia in New York City.
Donnie developed a close relationship with the Bonanno "capo" (crew captain) Dominick "Sonny Black" Napolitano, and was tutored in the ways of the Mafia by Bonanno mobster Benjamin "Lefty Guns" Ruggiero.
This book was the basis for the 1997 film Donnie Brasco, starring Johnny Depp as Pistone and Al Pacino as Lefty Guns.

VIDEO: Although I haven't seen Tristar's original release of "Donnie Brasco", I'd be willing to guess that like most of their re-releases this is the same presentation as the first release.

The authentic air and biographical storyline doesn't lend itself to glorification, but instead travels to the opposite end of the spectrum to the bowels of crime and lowly and primal underdogs who are at their bosses' bidding.
For Ruggiero it is the fear of not realising his dreams and for Brasco it is the genuine affection he feels for his down-trodden friend.

Since Donnie Brasco is an undercover agent who flirts with going native, the audience is put repeatedly in a place where they can sympathize with the mobsters, but never burdened as strong a feeling that they are truly honorable just because they exhibit some honorable characteristics.
A minor false note emerges in the caricature that is Donnie’s commanding officer, and his presence seems to tip the scales a bit unfairly toward resenting the authorities, but the authentic presence of Donnie’s long-suffering wife grounds many of those feelings.

Continuity: In the scene where Pacino asks a guy in a barbershop about Depp, the guy is being shaved, the shaving foam is only on his cheek, when he's in the dooropening calling Depp to come in the barbershop the foam reaches his temple, back inside the foam is only at his cheek again.
Other: One scene shows Lefty and Donnie feeding the lion hamburgers through a crack in the window of the Cadillac so as not to be bitten or attacked by the lion while feeding it.
Continuity: In the scene where the guy is vouching for Donnie at the barbershop, when he and Lefty walk out of the barbershop the windshield wipers on the Lincoln Donnie is sitting in are off, and so is the car.

"Donnie Brasco" is a true mafia masterpiece and what is more interesting about it is that it is based on an amazing true story.
"Donnie Brasco" represents a sort of coming out for Johnny Depp in that this was really his first adult dramatic role that didn't portray him as a teenager or something in the Science Fiction range.
With its rich screenplay and strong performances, 'Donnie Brasco' is a good film that ultimately is more about the friendship between two people rather than the mafia.

But the movie begins with Brasco already involved with the mob, so we don't get any scenes to show us if Brasco really loves his family or if he's trying to escape them.
''Donnie Brasco'' is frustrating, because it's literate, smartly made and maybe only a couple of scenes away from greatness (a few half-formed moments, particularly with Lefty's family, suggest that whole subplots have been edited out).
