ESPN.com - Demystifying the ghost of Donnie Moore   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Donnie Moore, and that fateful pitch in the fall 1986, make for some of the most amazingly oversimplified explanations of complicated human interaction you're likely to find in the sports world.
Moore was in baseball a few more years after the fall of 1986, including some brutal time spent with the Angels, enduring the wrath of still-angry fans.
Don't sacrifice Moore to the altar of baseball.

Donnie Moore - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tonya Moore and daughter Demetria, then 17 years of age, fled from the house and Demetria drove her mother to the hospital.
And so the pitch that Moore gave up for a home run, the point at which they were closest to advancing to the World Series (The Angels would win the World Series in 2002), was ultimately blamed for the shortcoming.
In the public perception, Moore became indelibly associated with the Angels' loss of the pennant, in much the same manner that Bill Buckner became associated with the Red Sox' subsequent loss of the World Series.

 Player Profile: Donnie Moore
While I enjoyed the article about Donnie Moore (in his profile) and his fateful pitch to Dave Henderson in the 1986 ALCS, there is a little more to the story, and his eventual suicide.
He was booed in subsequent appearances, and while he was on the DL for part of the 87 season, he was criticized by the press and even Angels management as malingering, especially after signing such a large contract.
Moore's life continued to unravel, he had fallen back into problems with alcohol and his marriage was failing.

Cursed To First: Twenty years ago
And so my first reaction, reading about Donnie Moore, is indeed to perpetuate his metaphor--to freeze him in that role on the mound twenty years ago, to interpret his historical life as a two-dimensional representative, to understand him for the character he played in the morality play of baseball and nothing else.
Tonya said Moore was loving when alcohol wasn't driving him to physically abuse her, and also said Moore too often kept his troubles bottled up inside...no home run could kill a man perfect for the role of closer, the loneliest job of all.
We turn to baseball because it is a world with a clean, cut and dried system, a world where Donnie Moore died a martyr--where Donnie Moore symbolizes violent self-sacrifice, buried on the mound, the scapegoat for his team and the team's fans and their dreams.
