The eldest son and heir of Edward Boys of Bonnington, by Jane, a daughter of Edward Sanders (of Northborne), and was baptized at Chillendon, on the 5th of April, in 1607.
This castle, within a mile of Newbury, was garrisoned in 1643 for King Charles I and commanded the road from Oxford to Newbury, and the road from London to Bath.
Donnington Castle is located north of the town of Newbury and was from 1643 under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel John Boys who spent £1,000 on earthworks to strengthen the defences to guard the route from London, and the road from Oxford to the port of Southampton.

The manor of Donnington, one mile to the north of Newbury town, belonged in the fourteenth century to the family of the Abberburys; and in the year 1385, Sir Richard—last male of that house—got his " licence to crenellate " from Richard II.
Donnington had, of course, been confiscated to the crown on the attainder of Edmund de la Pole, and was given by Henry VIII.
Donnington was being besieged by a Parliamentary detachment, who had breached it and broken down three of its towers, when the king came out of Oxford with some 11,000 men and relieved it.

My directions were to find Castle Donnington Village, take the main arterial through the centre to the other side of the village, and there would be the offices of British Midlands Aeroplanes.
(This is really not a castle, just a manor house, but it seemed like a castle to me at the time: Donnington Castle is the ruin whence the village gets its name.) I drove down to the "castle" and discovered it had a car park.
Reception was in the castle, but they directed me to a recently completed, modern, replete-with-glass-windows office building, built on a hill below the castle and obscured from sight from the car park.

Donnington was to be the home of his daughter, Alice, and her first husband, Sir John Philip, when they married in 1415.
She descended on Donnington from Wales and had the Mayor of Newbury supply her with armed clothiers to instigate a pitched battle at the castle gates!
By the time of the Civil War, the castle was owned by the Parliamentarian Packer family, but, at the commencement of hostilities, it was quickly taken for the King and held by Sir John Boys.

We stopped to take pictures of Brougham Castle (from the outside) and then drove up to Carlisle to see Carlisle Castle and Carlisle Cathedral.
In the afternoon, we drove to the Glenturret Distillery to enjoy the "Famous Grouse Experience", where they gave us a tour of the distillery and samples as well as a display on the blending of the Famous Grouse scotch whiskey (which contains Glenturret scotch as part of the blend).

Casuals were finally triumphant on Sunday when they beat Castle Donnington in the Three Counties Shield.
It is probably true that the Donnington players will attribute their loss to tired limbs from the previous day's game, but it was clear from the start that they were going to make Casuals work for their victory and they battled well.
They mixed their game well but Casuals were solid in defence and despite some valiant charges no quarter was given by the visitors.
