 The Band
Intrigued, I caught the band on the following Saturday night and was told by a few of their huge following that I should really check them out at Donovan's Reef in Sea Bright, the band's home base.
While their Saturday night sets at Chubby's were conservative, their Sunday night sets at Donovan's Reef proved their fans right, The Jirks are a very unique cover band with a large repertoire.
The band began their first set with 'Dollar Bill,' then launched into 'You Can't Always Get What You Want.' Later, a version of 'Sympathy For The Devil" (which included the old Schoolhouse Rock ditty 'Three Is A Magic Number') proved why the band has such a large following.

Aug 1 2005, 07:44 PM I like both of these movies...Donovan's Reef is just a fun movie to watch on a Sunday afternoon and Hellfighters is still a rough and tough John Wayne movie just without the horses.
Oct 18 2004, 08:20 AM DONOVAN'S REEF is in my top five of favorite Wayne movies, and I find the island paradise they live on to be quite comforting, with their daily routines and annual barroom brawl.

Lee is quick to emphasize that she is making no judgements about her character's "choices" --Leila's to forsake part of her heritage for the good life or Arthur's to cling to the past at the expense of the present.

So in movies like Hitari, and Donovan's Reef, he was still turning the girls on with cigarette breath and using Camels as sexual paraphernalia.
The humor in the movie is largely supplied by an adorable Red Buttons, playing a former New York cabbie who currently acts as manic truck driver for John Wayne on his daily quest to capture animals.
There are two things that save this movie from the absolute bottom of the barrel: the Mancini soundtrack (with the exception of the "ditty" for the final chase scene), and the animal tracking scenes.

Trim, ladylike American film and theatre actress Elizabeth Allen has seldom been as appropriately cast as she was in John Ford's Donovan's Reef.
In 1965, Elizabeth Allen starred in Richard Rodgers' Broadway musical Do I Hear a Waltz?, which closed in about two months, but which enabled Elizabeth to demonstrate her lovely singing voice on the well-circulated Original Cast Album.
It was fascinating, however, to watch her portray an enemy-agent seductress on a 1966 episode of TV's The Man From UNCLE.

FIPRESCI - Criticism - Vienna Talent Press 04 - Straub, Huillet
Straub paired Le casque d'or and Donovan's Reef.
There certainly was a dramatic unity to Straub's "performance", beginning with his reflection on his own name as a once living Flemish verb and the history of the class struggle in his place of birth (Metz), to his spoken delivery of his will, in the form of Hölderlin's poetry.
Straub recounted Ford's admiration for Renoir from an old interview precisely (and even mentioned this a second time later to evoke their "elective affinities"): when asked which films Ford liked of Renoir's, he said "all of them", not La grande illusion.
