 Malaria a 'Near-Epidemic' in Dooars, says RSP Legislator
Malaria become a "near-epidemic" in the Dooars region of North Bengal claiming 88 lives and afflicting more than 20,000 persons in the past two and a half months, an RSP legislator in West Bengal said today.
It was mostly tea gardens and forest areas in the Dooars, that were affected by a virulent form of malaria and the affected got "very little" medical attention, he alleged.
Claiming that the incidence of malarial attacks was much higher than last year, he said there was a dearth of medical and para-medical staff, as well as medicines.

A passenger train hit an elephant as it crossed a track in the northern Dooars region of eastern India's West Bengal state Saturday night, said Tapas Bose, a forest officer in the district.
The Dooars region, home to many wild animals, is about 400 miles north of the state capital, Calcutta.
A government committee set up after protests by non-governmental organizations has recommended that trains travel at a maximum speed of 18 mph to 25 mph in the forests, especially areas frequented by wild elephant herds, said Animesh Basu of the Himalayan Nature and Adventure Foundation.
