  Doom Painting - brief overview
The Doom was originally discovered beneath limewash in 1831, Local artist David Gee was paid to restore it and apply a varnish coating to the work, but this rapidly darkened and by 1855 most of the painting was obscured.
It was clear that vibrations, from the major repairs needed, might cause damage to the Doom painting, so with the help and advice of English Heritage a symposium was held at Holy Trinity in 1995.
The Doom painting was obviously completed after the raising of the clerestory, it lies across the line of the original, steeper roof.

Medieval fresco uncovered in Coventry   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
The 15th-century painting, one of the few surviving examples of the wall paintings that were common in English churches before the Reformation, was discovered by accident after a fire in 1986 burnt away the layer of whitewash that was covering it.
It was still impossible to view the fresco properly, however, because the paint was flened and damaged, which prompted the church to begin a restoration process that has taken a team of six specialists 17 years to complete.
Their work has exposed a spectacular work of art known as the "Coventry Doom", which is dominated by a monumental figure of Christ passing judgment on a crowd of people in 15th-century dress.

Doom's attractiveness was entirely self-defined, her guise a rejection of mainstream society's packaging of the perfect feminine look and role.

13th Century Doom Painting on Wood, ST MICHAEL’S CHURCH, ST ALBANS
It is the original oil painting and has survived untouched thanks to wooden panelling that covered it for 350 years and to the thick layer of varnish applied in the 19th century.
Other churches painted over, or physically removed, their wall paintings and the fact that St Michael’s undertook the effort and expense of covering it in this way implies that the work was valued even at that time.
The ‘Restoration’ of the church in 1810 revealed the Doom painting and is described in Henry Cook’s note.

Doom III promises to redefine the video game genre made famous by the groundbreaking Doom in 1993 — the "first-person shooter," in which players see through the eyes of heavily armed characters as they fire their way through enemy-filled levels.
The original Doom consisted of a maze of dim hallways with hordes of flat, blocky demons that served as target practice.
Not coincidentally, Doom II, released in 1994, also was the first game to carry a voluntary rating: M for mature, ages 17 and up.

principles of texture blending : Quake3Bits TUTORIAL
Invariably as you paint you'll find certain areas work better than others which may require slight adjustments to the underlying mesh, in which case you want this to be as easy as possible to do; quads tend to be easier to edit then triangles.
The mesh 'remembers' the vertex painted data when it's exported, which the game then makes use of to physically blend the textures based on the vertex paint data stored in the mesh and the material information defined by the text in the games *.mtl file (more on this later).
When you vertex paint the mesh you're taking advantage of this, the example mesh in this tutorial for instance, is slightly more dense where the fl colour has been painted so in game blending creates nice strong edges and blended texture distribution in those areas.
