WAD - Doom Wiki - A Wikia wiki
WAD (which, according to the Doom Bible, is an acronym for "Where's All the Data?" [1]) is the file format used by Doom and all Doom-engine-based games for storing data.
In Doom, this had to be in the form ExMy or MAPxx, where x and y could not exceed 4 and 9 respectively (Ultimate Doom), and xx could not exceed 32 (Doom 2/Final Doom).

This WAD is called 'Dreamland' because most of the design work came to Martin in a dream.
It is the first WAD that Martin created completely independent of me, and after a lot of work it's finally looking quite polished.
Apparently this was inspired by my experimention with coloured lighting effects in his WAD 'I Am Very Weird' (through judicious use of similar textures in different hues).

These are the megawads (wads that have many levels) that I like the most, I didn't include any I don't like.

Make sure the WADs are in the same directory/folder with the game you're playing (or specify the exact path), and include the ".wad" extension when specifying each filename.
When loading an external WAD file, the game may display a paragraph-long message which reads (in part): "ATTENTION: This version of DOOM has been modified." This message is typically an indication that 1 or more internal maps will be temporarily replaced by maps from the selected WAD files when gameplay begins.
Doom II and both Final Doom games each contain a single 32-map group; an "Episode" designator is not used.

Selling WAD files (answers by Raphael Quinet)
These WAD files were created with freeware or shareware editors, using the example of other WAD files and the guidelines given in the Unofficial Doom Specs or other tutorials.
Well, they won't actually do this because the ``openness'' of Doom made its success, but they could for example make sure that the only way to create third-party levels is by using their own editor, which would come with a strict license regarding the distribution of new levels.
If all WAD authors would start selling their levels, there would certainly be a lot of crap on the market and we would all loose in the end.

For example, the Doom II executable cannot be used with a Final Doom IWAD, as that executable was created before Final Doom was released.

I've never seen it before; AOL erased all the HTML files in the directories of his websites once the FBI had copies and I was only able to save the image and zip files, though I missed a few of those before AOL yanked them as well.
Reb never wanted his wads distributed over the 'net by others - he wanted sole control of distribution and said as much in his readme files that he included with the levels he made.
