As evidenced by how frequently the terms have been used on Usenet, "Doom clone" was more common than "first-person shooter" until the late 1990s.
Doom clone is a term used to refer to a computer game with similar gameplay as the 1993 first-person shooter Doom.
However, "Doom clones" was the more common term until the late 1990s, and is still used occasionally, mainly in reference to early first-person shooters.

Doom 64 is, to put it as bluntly as I can, a waste of money to rent.
It might be faithful to the old Doom engine in a sort of nostalgic way, except that so much else has changed.
This is the one part of Doom 64 that I really liked, and it gives me hope that Quake 64 will be able to have a nice soundtrack even without the redbook audio.

Although it could be seen as another Doom clone, Alien Trilogy surpasses this label as it fully draws you into its nightmare world.

Quite a while ago, there was a game called Heretic in the beginning of the Doom clone craze.
Like Doom 64, the 2D sprites have maybe two frames of animation at most, and there is tons of pop-in.

 Quake is far from earth-shattering
Despite the high regard in which Quake is held as a single person game it falls woefully and disappointingly short of delivering what it promises.
Instead of being the "new" Doom, Quake (id software--www.idsoftware.com) is in many ways a step down from the old Doom (Doom II, anyway) and is basically just another Doom clone--albeit one made by people pretty adept at the genre.
The reason for this is that it does not have enough variety, excitement or fun--especially compared to Duke Nukem 3D, and even to Doom II in several aspects.

Hexen is the sequel to the Doom spawn Heretic and it's not that bad for its genre.
Doom was fairly outrageous in plot and thus not really `scary', but Heretic managed to convey a spooky effect that Doom failed to deliver.
I liked the weapons in Hexen ten times better than the ones in Doom or Doom II and really enjoyed being able to play different character classes.

You *will* need to have an understanding of c/c++ to be able to make sense of most of it as well as a handle on trigonometry although you could probably get by without really understanding most of it.
Doom was written using ray-casting, which while still useful for some purposes, isn't the way in which it would be written now (hardware accelerated graphics cards being slightly more common these days...).
DOOM has no jumping and doom things are only sprites...

I also remember an Atari dealer having a "8-bit Doom clone" in their catalog, one of three dealers I know for sure; B&C, Best or Video61 (they all produce new carts or prototype burns for Atari systems).
By the way, I couldn't find that Doom clone I saw before, it was a "coming soon" thing, and probably got canceled, unless they changed it's name.
Homebrew version of doom is being worked on for the genesis.
