Doom metal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Doom metal is a form of heavy metal that emerged as a recognized genre of metal in the mid-1980s.
Doom metal is slow and heavy, with a pessimistic nature and often with intentions to evoke an atmosphere of darkness, despair and misery.
Doom metal first became widely recognized within the metal scene with Sweden's Candlemass, who are hailed in the mainstream metal press as one of the most important and influential doom metal bands; their 1986 album Epicus Doomicus Metallicus is considered a genre-defining release.

 Doom metal
Doom metal is a type of heavy metal music which developed in the mid 1980s.
When the sound developed, bands like Trouble[?] and Candlemass[?] were critically acclaimed for their return to the old school sounds of Black Sabbath and Blue Oyster Cult, though sales were slim; metal audiences at the time were listening to thrash metal or hair metal, and both were swift, hard and energetic, very unlike doom metal.
The old school imitation of 1970s bands was picked up by stoner metal groups, while a New Orleans metal scene developed a gothic rock/doom metal hybrid that came to be known as sludge metal[?].

One of the more extreme forms of metal, death metal is basically an offshoot of thrash, with less melodic riffs and a low, growly, often almost unintelligible vocal style that at its best (or worst, depending on one's point of view) has been described as "cookie monster vocals".
Black Sabbath are, of course, the fathers of metal in general, but their early work concentrated on slow riffing and thus is the primary influence on doom metal bands.
A subgenre of doom metal, doomdeath combines the slow pace of doom with the low, growly vocal style of death metal.

Dark metal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dark metal is a subjective term used to describe metal bands from various genres that have combined traits from gothic metal, doom metal, death metal and fl metal such as synthesizer use, acoustic guitar experimentation and/or operatic female vocals.
The term is thought to have been coined by German Band Bethlehem, with their album Dark Metal from 1994.
Samael, Tiamat, Daylight Dies and Rotting Christ[2] have been termed as "dark metal", however, more popular artists like Opeth, Katatonia and Lacuna Coil can be attributed to some extent as well for their sound.

Candlemass is widely acknowledged as one of the founders of the modern doom metal movement.
Founded by Leif Edling after the demise of his previous band Nemesis, the group immediately made its mark with their debut, Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, a true landmark in the doom field (and a BNR favorite), though it was the arrival of charismatic vocalist Messiah Marcolin that the band's trademark sound began to develop.
While not the pure doom of the classic era, these two albums are quite heavy and quite recommended, though they have not met with the same level of acceptance as the earlier albums.

One of the leading American doom metal acts of the '80s (along with Trouble and the Obsessed), Saint Vitus was cursed with public indifference throughout their decade-plus career, which both started and ended in frustrating obscurity.
It's universally agreed that the originators of the doom metal genre are Black Sabbath, but there were several bands of the '80s/early '90s who kept the style alive (during Sabbath's "lean years"), such as Saint Vitus, Trouble, Candlemass, and, especially, the U.K.-based Cathedral.
