Doomsday is the name of a fictional supervillain in the Superman comic book series best known for fighting Superman to the death.
Doomsday was artificially created by Bertron, a mad scientist with no morals working on Krypton, Superman's home world, though neither he nor his creator were Kryptonian (this was done prior to humanoid life evolving on Krypton).
Doomsday is essentially able to adapt and overcome any opponent because of the process by which he was created (he was always stronger than he had been prior to his last death).

Doomsday is supposed to be so fast, even Superman can be taken by surprise, but though there are myriad techniques the artists could employ to capture the sense of superfast movement, they choose not to.
This collection shows the comic's evolution: in the early stories Superman is a bit cocky, and not all that reverential of life, he evolves into a more pious, almost Christ-like figure by the '70s, then Moore and Byrne up the violence and turn Supes into a snarling, epithet-hurling, bruiser.

If the comics were read individually, it would have meant a whole lot better, but since those issues have become a rarity, collecting them was the right choice all in all.
The story introduces Doomsday, a character so bestial and primal he'll make any horror monster run for his money and teh cruelty he portrays is somewhat disturbing.
Not much is said about the monster's origin and that could be held as a downpoint to the story, but as mentioned since this was part of an ongoing series, his origins are mentioned and delved in deeper later on.

Waverider describes what happened on Calaton, Doomsday took world destorying blast from a superpowered energy being and was downed, but later in the comic came back and killed him.
In this comic he also died fighting Darkseid, only to raise again MINUTES later and be one of the first creatures in history to actually HARM Darkseid.
doomsday is more durable then superman probably and supes can take a planet destroying blast and with enough force can throw planet destroying plants but he'd have to really put all his muscle into it.
