Arch Enemy - Doomsday Machine : album review
Doomsday Machine makes for such awesome listening primarily because of the near perfect synergy between the instrumentation and production, the latter complimenting the work of each band member so significantly that the deadly combo of Bengtsson and mix-master Andy Sneap could well become metal's hottest studio commodity.
Opening number Enter The Machine is a prime example of metal at its very, very best.
As simplistic and primal in its structure as Korn's Blind, yet with as much presence as the orchestrated ballads of Nightwish, this instrumental is simply breathtaking.

While Doomsday Machine may not be the band’s swansong, it is certainly their heaviest album to date.
It is true that some may find the progressed heaviness of the album somewhat obscuring in view of the continuity that the band has established with the style and craftsmanship of their previous albums.
Doomsday Machine appears to me to be a return to the complexity, detail, and feel of the Wages album, except the band has taken the heaviness and the melodies to another, more extreme level.

‘Doomsday Machine’ is their sixth official album and third under Angela and it seems to be a slight deviation from what the fans have come to expect from this Swedish metal super group.
This new album is unfocussed with moments of pure brilliance combined with the rest that does not fit together in an interconnected manner.
They start the proceedings with a slow melodic instrumental, ‘Enter the Machine’, which seems to be a companion to the eighth track instrumental, ‘Hybrids of Steel’, which embodies the Amott brothers guitar skills as they interweave their playing.

A late afternoon I was suposed to have Angela call me to talk about the new album, though when the phone rang, it was Daniel in the other end, and that didn't turn out as bad, after I got the questions tweaked a bit a long the way.
There are of course a lot of guitar solos and so on, on the album as well, but it is not as catchy and easy going as on the last couple of albums, we wanted to make an album that was a bit deeper this time.
"Doomsday Machine" is not a concept album, even though there is a thread connecting the songs, illustrated by the machine-like sounds.

'Doomsday Machine', album number six from the Swedish juggernaut (and the third without original vocalist Johan 'Liiva' Axlsson) is not disappointing, but having said that, 2003's 'Anthems Of Rebellion' was; enough-so that my expectations for a follow-up were significantly lowered...
Arch Enemy fans will feel at home with 'Doomsday Machine' from the opening moments of the album, which come in the form of a two-minute instrumental intro which, incidentally is also one of the strongest tracks of the record.

Arch Enemy: Doomsday Machine - PopMatters Music Review
For all the good qualities of Doomsday Machine, you have to remember that unlike Carcass, unlike At the Gates, Arch Enemy are far from innovative.
Michael and Christopher Amott truly shine on the album, their solos the highlight of each track, and the album's three instrumentals, "Enter the Machine", "I Am Legend" (which segues into the brilliant thrasher "Out For Blood"), and especially the fantastic "Hybrids of Steel" all stand up well alongside the vocal-oriented tracks.
Doomsday Machine does wear thin late in the proceedings, as the sleepwalking "Mechanic God Creation" and "Machtkampf" both sound phoned in.

TorrentBox.com - Torrent details for "Arch Enemy - Doomsday Machine (2005)"
Doomsday Machine's "game" begins with "Enter the Machine," a majestic, harmony-laden instrumental that some might find more adequate for a power metal album than anything from Arch Enemy, but which actually proves very fitting as exceedingly melodious songs like "Taking Back My Soul," "Mechanic God Creation," and "Slaves of Yesterday" proceed to be unleashed.
As for the front, vocalist Gossow's ragged croak is really put to the test by the band's increasingly melodic and dynamically varied instrumental backdrops, giving rise to legitimate concerns as to whether she has finally transformed from asset to liability.
Never an overpowering presence to begin with (calling Karyn Crisis!), at times she totally nails it (such as on the album highlight "Carry the Cross"), while at others she's given the studio processing treatment (see the quasi-industrial "My Apocalypse"), as if in a bid to keep up with the surrounding din.

Bottom line is this album could've been something so much better, and I fear it is just evidence that this band may be becoming content in not pushing forward.
The band's sixth studio album, and the third featuring vocalist Angela Gossow, lands at a time when metal is thriving and wild, searing, neo-classical guitar solos are held in high regard once more.
That said, Doomsday Machine does retain some of the polish and the fist-pumping commercial intent which built the band some momentum with their last album, Anthems of Rebellion.

This machine grabs you by the balls right from the start with the excellent intro track, and the album's strongest song, "Taking Back My Soul." it follows with "Nemesis", not the strongest track on the album, but features an anthemic, catchy chorus.
The album is definitely not firmly in either the death or thrash camp, bringing bands like The Crown to mind at times.
It is a logical progression for metal as a whole, and this album could be the framework for a more modern sound that isn't completely mainstream friendly.

The band succeeded quite well with this new approach to making music and the sound just got heavier since then, as you can tell by listening to their 2003 release "Anthems Of Rebellion" which really showed great solos as well as aggressive drumming.
Another excellent song on “Doomsday Machine” is the instrumental “Hybrids Of Steel” which shows off the superior talent of the band’s guitarists.

That very scenario was one that the four boys and one girl hinted at with the release of their last album, 2003's Anthems Of Rebellion, which encompassed so-called modern sounds or, in essence, mallcore and Ozzfest tendencies in order to appeal to the fickle mainstream crowd.
Now comes 2005 and the docking of Doomsday Machine sees the band hint at the latter scenario at first glance, yet confirms its desire to wisely stick with its heavy metal fan base upon closer inspection.

On the subject of musicianship, like was said before, "Doomsday Machine" is a definitely step-up from "Anthems of Rebellion." While, they've still got some moments of radio-Metal placed throughout the entire CD, they've returned to a Thrashier sound, almost sounding like they're aiming to re-live the glory days when an Arch Enemy CD actually crushed.
I picked up the doomsday machine today expecting to hear more of what i loved on wages and anthems, and it was kind of a let down.
I think "Doomsday Machine" is a step up from the last album, however it doesn't stand up to "Wages Of Sin." None of the songs on the Anthems album was really worth remembering while this one had a couple that stuck out to me.

Their follow-up album to Wages, 2003's Anthems of Rebellion, was a softened up and formulaic album designed to get them more mainstream acceptance a la the last two In Flames albums.
Now normally lyrics aren't even an issue for a metal album because they're impossible to decipher in the first place, but this album has some of the corniest couplets this side of the crappy poetry you used to write to try to convince girls you were "sensitive" back in high school.
In fact, the best song on the album may be the instrumental "Hybrids of Steel", which is a refreshing 4-minute break from the lyrical silliness near the end of the album and really showcases the chops of the dueling Arnott brothers.

One of my favorites of the album, and it’s also the song where certain inspirational themes can be discerned.
That means, to release three quality albums in sequence, pushing your musical boundaries without missing a beat or straying from who you are, building a following from the ground up.
The giants of metal are just that, because they have at least a three album legacy in the trunk; Maiden, Metallica, Megadeth… With this release Arch Enemy has both joined the ranks of those bands, and made a point to their fans of both camps; This is the new Arch Enemy.
