The castle is an unusual structure consisting of a circular tower in a small bawn (walled enclosure).
The ruined castle was originally built in the 12th century by the O'Connors, later becoming a O'Brien stronghold occupied by Sir Turlough O'Brien during the threatened invasion at the time of the Spanish Armada (1588).
The remains of a MacMahon castle, captured in 1599 by the Earl of Thomond and given to his brother, Donal O'Brien, predocessor of the Viscounts Clare of Clare's Dragoons fame.

Doonagore Castle is a round 14th-century tower house with a small walled enclosure located on the outskirts of the small, coastal town of Doolin in County Clare, Ireland.
Doonagore Castle is presently a private residence, inaccessible to the public.
Doonagore Castle was repaired in the early 1800s, but by the middle of that century had again deteriorated in the care of the Nagle family.

The castle sits on a high hill overlooking Doolin and, along with a nearby radio mast, is used as a navigational point by boats approaching Doolin Pier.
In 1588, during the retreat of the Spanish Armada from its failed attempt to invade England, 170 survivors of a Spainish shipwreck were caught by County Clare High Sheriff, Boetius MacClancy, hanged at Doonagore Castle, and buried in a barrow outside of Doolin.

One of the largest castles in Ireland, Cahir Castle in County Tipperary was built in 1142 by Conor O'Brien, Prince of Thomond, on an island in the river Suir.
In 1375, the castle was granted to Butler, newly-created Baron of Cahir, for his loyalty to Edward III.
The Butlers of Cahir sided with the Irish in the Elizabethan wars, and in 1599 the castle was captured after a three day siege by the army of the Earl of Essex.

Castle View was partly built in 1837 by Michael Nagle and in 1855 James Nagle took over the farm and completed the work.

Counsellor Gore repaired it in the early 1800's but by 1837 it had fallen into disrepair and was described in that year as being a round tower on a square base.
One and a half miles north of here was their old fort Cahir MacClancy, and nearby was the castle or manor of Knockfinn first mentioned in 1577.

Within living memory Doolin was a Gaeltacht area where many of the older inhabitants only spoke Irish; records over the years show a vast collection of North Clare Folklore written in the native Gaelic.
Doolin is dotted with the remains of historical churches and castles including the ruined Doonmacfelim Castle.
Although reduced to one story it still remains prominent landmark today.
