  NationMaster - Encyclopedia: Doormatism
Doormatism is a derogatory description of a certain interpretation of doctrines of nonviolence, though the word is a neologism and was never in widespread use.
The image of a doormat attempts to conjure up an image of intentional self-victimization, i.e., allowing oneself to be walked on or stepped over, rather than retaliating, as would a doormat.

Against Holiday's emotional depth, however, I must set what I consider her tendency to exploit that depth with plaintiveness, occasionally descending to whining.
It came out best - or rather worst - in what I call songs of victimhood or "doormatism'', an attribute that was uncommon in contemporary jazz, as distinct from pop, vocals.
The only doormat song in this compilation is "My Man'', and by the time most of the songs here were recorded drug and alcohol abuse had given Holiday's voice a rasping quality that smothered much of the whining tone, if not the plaintiveness.

We mustn’t think that to turn the other cheek is to glorify “doormatism” and glorify as well the invitation to victimisation that goes with it.
We must never confuse our Lord’s going to the cross with “doormatism.” “No one takes my life from me” he insisted; “I lay it down of my own accord.” Others may think he has “victim” written on his forehead.

Borg comes to the conclusion that instead of promoting any kind of 'doormatism' here, Jesus is actually advocating passive resistance.
He explains how in the culture of the time, a superior would strike his inferior by backhanding him across the face, thus the phrase, "the right cheek" since most people are right handed, that is where a backhanded strike would fall.

All credit to my reader, she gathered her composure and read on to the end of the allotted chunk.
As it happened, the outburst was helpful - my opening thread on this verse was how it has been abused to advocate doormatism (new word for today) among women whose partners are abusive and how that is not, I believe, an authentic reading.
It seemed significant in some small way that this happened a couple of days after I read a little book called 'Spiritual Lemons: Biblical Women, Irreverent Laughter and Righteous Rage' by Rev Lyn Brakeman (who obviously is as good at snappy titles as I am).
