Doornkop township is situated in Soweto and has 80,000 inhabitants.
There is a clear increase since 1997, when the project started in the township, in number of orphans, child headed families, persons that need care in their homes and in the number of death because of AIDS.
Introduction: Children and youth in Doornkop are vulnerable as many of them grow up in poverty, without secure income in their families.

The Doornkop resource is 20.1 million tonnes at a gold grade of 10.17 g/t, equivalent to 6.6 million ounces of gold, and the project will extract 18.3 million tonnes at 6.36 g/t for 3.8 million ounces of gold.
In August 1983 sinking of the Doornkop main and ventilation shafts began, and the plan was to mine both the Kimberly Reef and the South Reef.
The Doornkop project will be completed in three phases, the first of which will enable the production of the 45,000 tonnes a month from the South Reef.

For project purposes, it is estimated that 117 tons or 3.75 million ounces of gold will be recovered at a grade of 6.4 grams per ton, Harmony said in a statement.
Harmony said Africa Vanguard Resources (Doornkop) (Pty) Ltd (AVR), a broad-based fl economic empowerment company, had acquired 26 percent of the mineral rights to the project for a consideration of R250-million.
