BBC Sport Academy | Cricket | Skills | What is the 'doosra'?
In Hindi and Urdu, doosra means "second" or "other".
Put simply, the doosra is the off-spinner's version of the googly.
Over the past five years, the world's top off spinners have developed the doosra to baffle batsmen.

In Doosra Dashak, micro-planning is used as a method of systematic review of the project through participant-wise monitoring of their progress.
When the proposal of the Doosra Dashak project was written it was quite clear that the project would primarily work with marginalized section of the society, those who have remained out of the school system or who are dropouts.
Doosra Dashak decided to participate in Panchayati Raj elections held in January 2005 through "Voter Awareness Campaign" just before the elections.

Murali ready to dump the 'doosra'
Test cricket's bowling record-holder Muttiah Muralitharan today hinted he will drop the controversial 'doosra' delivery from his armoury after it was deemed illegal by the sport's world governing body.
"The 'doosra' has always been at the back of my mind," Muralitharan was quoted as saying in the Colombo-based 'Daily News' in perhaps his first public statement on the controversial delivery.
The spinner, however, did bowl the 'doosra' in the opening Test against Zimbabwe at Harare where he took eight wickets to break retired West Indies fast bowler Courtney Walsh's world record of 519 Test wickets.

 Obscura: Doosra
The doosra is a relatively new type of ball.
Saqlain Mushtaq of Pakistan invented the delivery in the mid-1990s, causing amazement in the cricketing world, as no off-spinner prior to him had bowled a delivery that had turned from leg to off.
The naming of the delivery is attributed to Moin Khan, the former Pakistani wicketkeeper, who would shout to Mushtaq to bowl the "doosra" (the other one) from behind the stumps.

Murali told not to bowl 'doosra'
London - Muttiah Muralitharan's controversial 'doosra' delivery was deemed illegal after the International Cricket Council (ICC) said here Tuesday it supported the decision by Sri Lanka cricket to tell the off-spinner not to bowl the delivery.
That prompted match referee Chris Broad to report Murali to the ICC after the spinner used the "doosra", which unlike a conventional off-spinner turns away from the right-handed batsman, during Sri Lanka's home Test series against Australia in March.
However, under ICC regulations Murali was allowed to continue bowling "doosra" and all.

Death of the doosra - CricketFeatures - www.theage.com.au
Sri Lankan maestro Muttiah Muralitharan fears the days of the doosra are numbered, after Indian off spinner Harbhajan Singh was reported for a suspect action by the International Cricket Council.
When asked whether he felt Harbhajan's doosra was suspect, Muralitharan was prompt to defend his off-spinning rival.
Muralitharan has been analysed by Perth-based biomechanist Bruce Elliott, who measured his elbow flexion at between 11 and 14 degrees when delivering the doosra and believes the ball is impossible to bowl without bending the arm to some extent.

Murali was taking part in an experiment designed to show that the flexion in his elbow, when bowling his orthodox off breaks and the magical doosra, was minimal and, contrary to the opinions of some vocal critics, did not offer him any unfair advantage.
Murali is utterly convinced that his doosra is a fair delivery, like the rest of his armoury, and he is determined to prove that to the world.

Why Murali's doosra is fine || Indian Cricket Fever - Unofficial Indian Cricket News and Views
Murali's Doosra is "illegal" because the ICC says that spinners are only allowed to bend their elbow by 5 degrees.
His doosra is only nominally beyond the 10 degree limit.
It is humanly impossible to point your palm skywards and bowl the doosra without bending your arm by more than 5 degrees.

BBC SPORT | Cricket | Murali to bowl into oblivion
The ICC understood that SLC had given Murali a firm instruction to not bowl the doosra - in compliance with the first stage of the new ICC process that requires national boards to first deal with suspect actions.
But while the queues lengthen to support or deride Murali, the one man whose objectivity has given balance to the controversy is continuing his crusade against the laws, not the so-called chuckers.
Bruce Elliott, the University of Western Australia professor whose biomechanical tests declared the doosra illegal, said Murali's case was the thin edge of the wedge.

BBC SPORT | Cricket | Skills | What is a doosra?
Over the past five years, the world's top off-spinners have developed the doosra to baffle batsmen.
The doosra is bowled from the back of the hand with a lot of top-spin, but the wrist still moves in a clockwise direction.
Sceptics claim the doosra cannot be bowled with a legitimate bowling action because it is physically impossible to do with a straight arm.

The Hindu : Sport / Cricket : Murali told not to bowl `doosra'
Dogged for several years by allegations that he throws rather than bowls the ball, Muralitharan, who has a genetic defect, which prevents him fully straightening his bowling arm, was reported to the International Cricket Council over a suspect action.
The suspicion relates only to his `doosra', a delivery that spins quickly away from a right-handed batsman.
In Colombo, Muralitharan hinted that he would drop the controversial `doosra' delivery from his armoury after it was deemed illegal by the sport's world governing body.

ICC unable to find solution to Harbhajan's doosra : Cricket NEWS : CricketZone.Com
Off-spinner Harbhajan Singh 's 'doosra' seems to have snared the International Cricket Council too, with game's world governing body unable to find a lasting solution to the issue of his suspect bowling action.
It was the first case reported under the revamped illegal bowling review process that came into effect from March and as per the guidelines the ICC was supposed to have reviewed the bowler's action within 21 days of receiving the report.
ICC had maintained that this new limit was the point at which straightening becomes visible to naked eye, but Prof Bruce Elliott, the Perth-based biomechanics expert who had worked with the ICC in the research on bowling actions, had said umpires on field could spot bending up to 10 degrees.

Apr 13 2004, 12:20 PM Well, we know the scientific analysis of Murali's doosra has been completed last week in Perth and we do know that the results have been passed on to Murali and the Sri Lanka board, even though they are denying this.
He can try and alter his action to bowl the "Doosra", it might/might not be within the 5% limit but its been termed illegal already by the ICC which is even more ludicrous.
I agree with Marauding J as well in saying that Murali exceeds the limit so the doosra is illegal and he should be banned from bowling it unless he can work on it and bring it down to within that 5 degree limit.

I have been requested by Sri Lanka Cricket not to bowl the Doosra, and consequently I refrain from bowling the Doosra at the recently concluded second test match against Zimbabwe played at Bullawayo.
After extensive tests, the UWA team concluded that I be allowed to continue bowling the Doosra "at least until a valid database is collected on the various spin bowling disciplines".
It is however, wrong for people to label me as a "chucker" based solely on what they see with the naked eyes, for which such people perceive as a 'throw' is an 'optical illusion', a fact proven by the tests carried out on my bowling action over the years.

Muttiah Muralitharan has vowed to keep bowling his controversial "doosra" despite a warning from the International Cricket Council that any repeat of his illegal delivery could lead to a one-year suspension.
Murali's state of mind is regarded as so volatile that Sri Lankan officials privately fear he could put his career at risk in a protest at what he believes is a witch-hunt against him.
His current mood has not been helped by confusion over whether Sri Lanka have instructed him to stop bowling the doosra, which was declared to be a throw in official tests conducted last month at the University of Western Australia.

Muralitharan to unleash doosra in New Zealand -DAWN - Sport; 21 January, 2005
Last March, he was reported for chucking his doosra - a leg spinner bowled with an off spinner's action - and warned he could be banned for a year if he continued to bowl the ball with a 14 degree bend in the elbow, well above the permitted five degrees for spin bowlers.
The ICC meanwhile looks set to change the rules which could see the doosra permitted once again with a meeting next month expected to approve a recommendation that all bowlers be allowed a 15 percent bend in the arm.
"Always I bowl well with the doosra." Muralitharan, the former world Test wicket record holder who is returning after six months recovery from surgery, will bowl in tandem in the three-match series with Australia's Shane Warne, the man who overtook his haul.

ABC Sport - Cricket - Allow 'unique' Murali to bowl doosra: experts
Sri Lankan spinner Muttiah Muralitharan should be allowed to bowl his controversial doosra as he does not gain "unfair advantage" with his bowling action, University of Western Australia experts have recommended in their official report to international cricket chiefs.
Foster was part of a four-member University team which tested Muralitharan's bowling action earlier this month after the Sri Lankan was reported for his doosra delivery, which spins away from right-handers instead of coming into them.
"A straightening of 10 degrees when he (Murali) bowls his 'doosra' is not excessive and that should not therefore be deemed advantagous," Foster said in the report.

Cricinfo - Elliott okays Muralitharan doosra
Bruce Elliott's biomechanics team at the University of Western Australia has concluded that Muttiah Muralitharan should be allowed to continue using his doosra until the completion of further biomechanical research into slow bowling.
But Muralitharan, who departed last week for Sri Lanka's tour of Zimbabwe, faces an anxious wait to see whether those conclusions are accepted because the results also show that he currently exceeds the flexing threshold that has been agreed by the ICC.
The Sri Lankan cricket board, privately upbeat after the reading the conclusions of Elliott's assessment of Muralitharan's doosra, which was e-mailed to the board on Wednesday, have refused to publicise the results until they have been analysed by a Bowling Review Group and sent to the ICC.
