A crater pit occurs near of the summit of the peak - presumably a chance impact.
The most interesting feature inside the crater is it broad wreath of hilly ridges that are concentric with the crater rim.
Finally, note that the wreath and crater floor between Doppelmayer'sentral peak and Mare Humorum is dark - dark pyroclastic deposits have been mapped to the north of the crater, but this may be another new surprise.

To the south, Doppelmayer and nearby Puiseux are other interesting "ghost craters".
When Gassendi is right on the terminator, its southern wall stays dark much longer than the rest of its walls, making it obvious how that side of the crater has sunk along with the mare it borders.
Doppelmayer showed a large central peak and--unlike Rukl's drawing--looked to have a broken concentric ring around the peak.

Mare Humorum is the most clearly demarcated of the maria in the western hemisphere, and is one of the most-clearly defined impact basins on the whole of the visible side of the Moon.
Before this, however, peripheral craters, such as Gassendi and Doppelmayer, were formed by impacts on the sloping sides of the basin.
One of these is Leibig Scarp, named after the crater just to its west, and the feature probably connects with a similar scarp seen protruding from the western side of Gassendi.
