Midnight Eye book review: The Dorama Encyclopedia (authors: Jonathan Clements and Motoko Tamamuro, publisher: Stone ...
Japanese TV drama series (or dorama, in its proper romanised form) are the next frontier of pop culture fandom.
Having said that, a solid read of the actual writing quickly dispels the notion that the authors were operating with any kind of premeditated attitude of cultural supremacy (Tamamuro is Japanese after all).
It's obviously a dream come true for existing dorama fans and it's the X that marks the spot for those looking for the next craze in Japanese pop culture fandom.

The first English Japanese dorama database which was first created on Neo-Tokyo BBS in 1993 and extended to the Web in 1998.
The database is a collection of Japanese doramas which members of the Asunaro Association and many fans of Japanese dramas have submitted over the years.
As a fan and also a creator of the online J!-ENT Japanese Dorama Database, it is a real pleasure to see a book not only covering Japanese drama but also sentai and including anime references for the anime fans who have discovered Japanese dramas.

 Renzoku Ren'ai Dorama
These dramas that consist of multiple episodes are known as "renzoku" (continuing) dorama, and those that run from the beginning to the end of a TV season are the most common and popular.
Since all dorama come to a definite end, the ending is a particularly important part of the show, but after watching a lot of ren'ai dorama one finds the endings tend to fall into a small number of categories.
This is more true of dorama than other art forms such as novels and movies, which tend to be more self-conscious artistically, and is reinforced by the fact that dorama are written for a purely Japanese audience.

 Dorama Recommendations
Morning doramas are often overlooked by dorama watchers, and they miss out on some great shows as a result.
This show is one of the most heartwarming doramas I've seen, and I mean that in a good way, not in the usual fake TV way.
Not at all a trendy dorama -- this is another more realistic show -- that starts off slowly and continues without a whole lot happening for the most part, but that gets very touching.

Japan Hero > Super Sentai, Kamen Rider, Tokusatsu Heroes and Anime Heroes
The Dorama Encyclopedia is a rather large tome that attempts to catalog literally over a thousand TV series produced in Japan since 1953.
The Super Sentai show entries proved to be just as good as the general tokusatsu ones, with the ones dedicated toshows that were re-packaged for distribution in the U.S. (Zyu Ranger – Aba Ranger) also throwing in some information about the US rendition of that particular sentai series.
Aside from the hero fare though, I found the book’s descriptions for other fare to be much more interesting as it presented a whole new universe of programs that seemed just as interesting and worthy of further exploration as the hero shows we love so much here at Japan Hero.

Given the setup, this is not one of the most delightful dorama series.
If a dorama can lift up my mood, it doesn't matter even if it is mediocre.
Pretty usual dorama with beautiful (especially Ai Kato as Natsumi), handsome and funny characters, unlikely coincidents and romantic but unsurprising plot.

Jedi Council Forums - Dorama fans?
'Doramas' are 'dramas': live-action hour-long shows that last for 10-12 episodes.
Instead of movies or regular television shows being the prime area for performers like in other places in the world, dramas or 'doramas' are where you really make it.
Japanese doramas are widely regarded as the best, and places like Hong Kong and Sinagpore have tried to duplicate it.
