  Llewellyn Encyclopedia: Doreen Valiente
Among the most influential figures in modern Wiccan history, Valiente was born in south London but raised in the West Country, where Witchcraft folklore was a significant part of everyday life well into the twentieth century.
Valiente became Gardner’s High Priestess shortly thereafter, and played a major role in revising the original Wiccan rituals, excising substantial passages borrowed from the works of Aleister Crowley (1875-1947).
For the remainder of her life, Valiente was active in English Wiccan circles; she wrote a number of books on the subject of Wicca, and by her last years was widely seen as the grande dame of English Wicca.

Doreen Valiente (1922]] - 1999) was a co-creator of Wicca, together with Gerald Gardner.
Valiente also wrote a number of poems for the use of Wiccans, including the first version of Charge of the Goddess.
Faced with challenges from sceptics Valiente attempted, with some success, to provide evidence for Gardner's claims concerning his intitiation, notably by identifying Dorothy Clutterbuck, the old witch who was supposed to have performed the initiation in an essay published in Eight Sabbats for Witches by Janet and Stewart Farrar.

I commend Valiente for refraining from both insisting that witches have always done things as they are done today and accusing those like Gardner from inventing modern witchcraft from whole cloth.
