Kavanaugh can be a little cartoony, and Doris Roberts, as Gitl's neighbor and ally, pushes it a little bit, too; much more understated and powerful is Mel Howard as Bernstein, Jake and Gitl's boarder, a scholar in the old country who spends his days sewing hems in the promised land.

Dorrie's perceptiveness when it comes to this mindset is what makes Fanny such an endearing character and causes the film to be so compelling.
When her mother is aghast to see her sleeping in it, Fanny remarks that it's actually quite comfortable.
Dorrie has stated that the film reflects the prevalent aspects of the modern German character: isolation and an almost-obsessive tendency to wonder about death.

THE OPENING SEQUENCE of Doris Dorrie's Happy defies the genre designated by the subtitle "drama": the first scene calls for a "flight over Berlin" with initially "shimmering, blurry lights" that will then take form in "buildings, streets, houses" until finally focusing on one specific apartment building, zooming in on one of the many lit windows.
This effective, even if cliched beginning of telling an individual story that is somehow tied to a larger cosmic whole is obviously borrowed from film.
