Doris Humphrey was born in Oak Park, Illinois, in 1895 and grew up in Chicago.
Like Isadora Duncan and Martha Graham, Doris Humphrey was interest ed in the fundamental importance of tension and relaxation in the body, and used it as the foundation of her own system of movement principles.
Humphrey's codification of "Fall and Recovery" and the development of a movement vocabulary based on its rhythms stands today as an important tradition in the modern dance family tree.

Doris Batcheller Humphrey (October 17, 1895 - December 29, 1958) was a famous dancer of the early twentieth century.
Humphrey retired from performing in 1945, conceding to the ravages of arthritis.
In 1990 he was granted the right to complete Humphrey's projected 1993 work, "The Libation Bearers" which received its posthumous premiere in 1990 in New York at the Annual Doris Humphrey Dance Festival.
