Dorneywood is a moderately large Queen Anne style house built in 1920, near Burnham in Buckinghamshire.
However Alec Douglas-Home, on becoming Prime Minister, was reluctant to forsake the more comfortable and modern Dorneywood for the antique splendours of Chequers.
Another, James Callaghan as Foreign Secretary, also had the use of Dorneywood (later Chevening was to become the official country home for the holder of that office).

Under the terms of the endowment providing for its use by successive Governments since the 1950s, Dorneywood is maintained at no cost to the taxpayer.
The same arrangement applies now as under previous administrations: no staff from any Government Department are employed at Dorneywood, and Government Ministers pay their own personal expenses on items such as food and drink when visiting Dorneywood privately.
Since May 1997, Dorneywood has been used for meetings with a range of Ministers and officials on a number of occasions.

Rex Whistler (1905 - 1944) was an artist who came to public attention in 1925 when at the age of twenty he painted the mural in the Tate Gallery restaurant in London.

His humorous style and mastery of trompe l'oeil gained him great popularity and he produced many illustrations for books as well as commisions for Shell and the Radio Times he also worked on scenery for theatrical productions.

The Tories accused the Deputy Prime Minister of hypocrisy because he does not have to pay the tax on his official residences, Admiralty House and Dorneywood, saving him more than £3,000 a year.
Written answers from ministers have revealed that the bill for Mr Prescott's flat in Admiralty House in Whitehall is picked up by the taxpayer, while the charge for Dorneywood, his official country residence in Buckinghamshire, is paid for by the charitable trust that owns the building.
If others did not pay, Mr Prescott would be liable for annual bills of about £1,200 and £2,400 respectively.

The Tories say Mr Prescott should be paying Westminster Council for the band H flat in Admiralty House and South Buckinghamshire Council for band H Dorneywood.
Mr Prescott's Parliamentary Under Secretary Jim Fitzpatrick has said in a written Commons reply that Admiralty House was a second home used solely for work and funded by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister so Mr Prescott had no personal tax liability.
He argued Dorneywood was owned and operated by the Dorneywood Trust which is a registered charity.
